Is Gaffer male cat or a female cat?

I need to know for my fanfic.

the only time I can recall Gaffer's gender being mentioned was in the "Cat Came Back" number where Gaffer was a she.

In my experience usually the song does not specify the cat's gender simply saying "it" instead of he or she so I say Gaffer is a female cat.
