Re: Guys,

For americans it's a big deal. Just say that or similar words on american tv and it gets bippped out. Thank god that's not a thing danish tv uses.

Actually its not. I think your view on American society and television might be a little skewed.

Where do you get that idea from

But on a more serious note. I'am thinking on other words than h***. I've heard that there were a tv-show that got a word past the bipp machine, and they celebrated that. I can't remember the name on it, I think it's one of the hospitals shows that are very popular.
And just watching the diferent talkshows and stuff like that and you hear blipp blipp all the time. And if theres no blipp theres a blur over slogans on peoples shirts or if someone flashes a bit to much flesh theres also a blur covering that. Or could it just be that they use it like an effect to make it a little more dramatic ?

And I can tell you that's it not just me that fell like that everyone that I've talk to about this agree with that.

But are you talking to Americans or people from your neck of the woods?

Language over here is anything but prudish. There are very few words you aren't allowed to say on television anymore. It sounds to me like you are watching too much Jerry Springer, and thats about as far away from what the norm of American Society is as you can be.

I think that's why the view of America is so skewed in Europe and other parts of the world. What is shown to you as a representative of America is the far extreme, not the norm at all. It might be wise to study up a little more before making such rash characterizations.

When I was in the Netherlands, they showed Cheers and Golden Girls, and I think Cheers was dubbed, so they may be leaving words that are useless out of the script.

I do know that a show came on at about 6 pm that I would call soft-porn! It was on for an hour.

Not that I watched or anything.

Radionate
It's people from my neck of the woods. But a few years back I lived in the same house as 2 American exchange journalist students, and after being in Denmark for about 5-6 months they came to about the same conclusion but still with some reservation.
I can tell you that we don't have any words that you not allowed say. But people keep the most nasty ones out anyway. But sometimes a word can slipp from ones lipps and thats just to bad. Theres no bipp machine here.
I'am sorry if you think that it too rash, but that's just how most people over here thinks about US tv. You may be right I don't know. I haven't seen any other US programs than those the danish channels buy. And theres ALOT of talkshows among them, for some strange reason. I never been to the states so I can only speak of what I know. I thinks it's great if it's not that way that most europeans think it is. And I'am not saying that it's a bad thing that the US channels do, I just find it a bit weird because it's something I'am not used to.

BTW Fozzie Bear I can tell you that in the scandinavian countrys it's only some kid shows that are dubbed. So no useless words are left out overhere.
And about the softcore you mention I can think of a similar thing here in Denmark. A few weeks ago there were a movie that was shown around 17:00 on a saturday that contain what one could call soft-porn. And to be honest I was a bit surprised myself that it was shown at that time of the day.
