Ever notice with most shows (not ALL, but a lot), the second season is always a rather dull season? The first season is almost always interesting because it just starts out, and takes time to grow... then things really start picking up speed and really hit their stride with the third... but the second usually doesn't offer any memorable moments.

I kinda feel the same way about many second seasons. For most shows I usually really like the first season (even if I don't always find the first season the best) because of the raw, almost amaturish quality as well as how different it is compared to later seasons, while I don't like the second season as much (even if the second season isn't my least-favorite season), sometimes I consider the second season an "in-between" season if I really like the first and third seasons (like with The Muppet Show... though there my favorite seasons are the odd-numbered seasons).

Some shows where I really like the second season include:
  • Newhart - I think my favorite seasons are the first three seasons and the last season.
  • Rocky and Bullwinkle - One of the few shows where I feel the first season (at least in regards to the main R&B storylines, the supporting segments are hit-or-miss) isn't that good... I do like the sorta activity book-like animation of the first few episodes, but the storylines are kinda slow and the characters aren't drawn that well. The show got really good late in the second season, with such superior episodes as "Metal Munching Mice", "The Last Angry Moose", and "Rue Brittania".
  • Happy Days - The second season is on par with the first season. In fact I think you could easily merge the first two into one and it wouldn't feel too different. But I guess you could say that about many shows that premiered as mid-season replacements.
  • Dinosaurs - But each season (except for the last) is better than the previous.

But for many shows, maybe I have a bit of a soft spot for characters, settings, and concepts that didn't make it past the first season (as well as the fact that the first season is "the first"). Of course, there are a number of shows where I like the second episode better than the first, and in most trilogies I like the second film the best.

Ever notice how in a few early Simpsons episodes (The Telltale Head, Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment) that when the characters are at church, they seem to have sunday school during the church service, as opposed to before? My church has sunday school before the main service, though I'm not sure if there are real churches that have Sunday school before church. But although those episodes depict Sunday school as happening before church, the majority of Simpsons episodes that show the characters in church have Bart, Lisa, and other kids attending the church service. So did Springfield's church just do away with Sunday school (I wouldn't be surprised, considering the show and the town)?

It depends on the church and the denomination.

Some churches have Sunday School before the main worship service, some churches (if they have a particularly large congregation) will have one service at like 9:00, then Sunday School, then a second service at 11:00.

I've noticed that certain churches, like Baptists, or non-denominational, will dismiss the kids to return to their little "classes" during the sermon the of the worship service.

My church has children's time before the service, then kids are there at the beginning, then the minister will talk to the kids about something, and then the kids will leave for the rest of the service for what is called "Children's Time", which is basically the church equivalent to recess. We'd watch videos or play games or do some other activity during this time. Those Simpsons examples I gave look like a regular Sunday school session.

That's really interesting to learn about. We don't have Sunday school because either the kids go to the Catholic school attached to the church, or the public school kids go to CCD (Catechism) classes after school during the week. Sometimes we had Bible camp during the summer, which could be fun, but that was optional.

In school if we had Mass they usually did dismiss the younger kids at some point "in order to further reflect on the lessons they've learned." On Sundays, sometimes there are Children's Masses where the kids sit at the alter with the priest and he discusses the Gospel reading with them.

Yeah, most churches have Vacation Bible School for a week or so during the summer, which was always fun as a kid. Well... it WAS... back in the day when we used to dress up in Biblical-looking attire, and the church's courtyard and the booths and everything were made up to look like Biblical times... then they started getting cheap and instead, they'd just have a different theme each year.

A few years ago, the theme was construction zones, and I was tasked with playing the part of a wisecracking construction barrel, lol. The kiddos loved it.

Wow, sounds like you guys had more money than we did, lol. We just reenacted scenes from the Gospel for ourselves, like Jesus telling the apostles to put their fishing nets in the sea or Jesus asking Zacchaeus to come down from the tree (we took turns standing on a chair to represent the tree, lol). No costumes or anything, pretty informal, lol.
