I miss the days when voice actors were the stars of these kinds of films and not just actors or singers. Well, for The Chipmunks I could see a singer. Anyway, wasn't Daws Butler the original voice of Yogi? He trained other voice actors who aren't even working any longer because someone in Hollywood decided to begin using current stars as voice actors.

Bring back the voice actors!

The problem is these big corporate studios... I think it was our ever-wisely Drtooth who dispelled that: the studios want people with marketable "names" to do the voices (though honestly, I think Dan Akyroyd is a bit of a "has been" by now, so I don't really understand the decision behind him being Yogi). Otherwise, liek with The Chipmunks as you mentioned, we both still have Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and Janice Karman (who've done the voices since the 80s), but Fox said to get "younger" actors, though again, it's really because neither of them have "marketable" names as say Justin Long, Jesse McCartney, etc. I think the only voice actor who reprised a role in a remake was June Foray voicing Rocky in the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie.

Indeed he was (wasn't he also Boo-Boo?); Daws was one of the tops of voice actors back in the golden era of cartoons. He was a staple with studios like Hanna-Barbera and Jay Ward Productions.

This doesn't look terribly interesting to me. But at least the nailed the look of the characters and the voices sound pretty good.

Don Messick.

I had to correct you before anything else.

I wouldn't doubt that they'd have to get a celebrity VA to do Yogi. Has he even been officially recast yet? we all know Daws Butler is gone, but so isn't Greg Burson, who was the offical recast for most of Daws's characters (and some of the Looney Tunes as well). Even if Yogi had the official cartoon studio voice, it would have to be some new guy anyway. Billy West coulda been BooBoo, though.

I still don't understand the "celebrity" voice cast for the Chipmunks. Their voices are so distorted did it even matter? They just wanted B to C list names to cling to the title. I do find that shallow and pathetic. But I still think Dan and Justin are more Yogi and BooBoo than whoever the heck is playing Mr. Ranger. Other than the fact he's completely wrong for the role and plays it so laid back it seems like another character completely, this movie doesn't look too bad.

Exactly! Its was really pointless.

Just like how Wayne Knight was the voice of Emperor Zurg on the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command TV show.

Yes, you're right... and he was also used his natural voice for Ranger Smith/the narrator.

Taking the thread off topic for a moment, but wasn't it you who theorized that even though Twentieth Century Fox claimed they wanted "younger" actors to do the voices, their real intentions were they wanted people with "marketable names" to do the voices, since people already know names like Justin Long and Amy Poehler, but not names like Ross Bagdasarian and Janice Karman?

That is far from pointless. A, you can tell Wayne Knight was the voice, it wasn't highly altered, and B, it's a clever little joke, considering Wayne played the villain in TS2. And besides, I always felt that Buzz and co sound different from the toy in the cartoon because... well, a lot of the time talking toys don't have the same voice actors and do indeed sound different. plus Disney didn't market the series as "Starring Third Rock's Wayne Knight." Though I find it highly odd he didn't voice Tantor in the Tarzan cartoon....

Plus, wasn't Zurg voiced by one of the animators? Think he has something better to do than voice a cartoon character.

Yes. but that's not what I'm saying...

The voice of Zurg in Toy Story 2 was Pixar employee Andrew Stanton, I never expected him to to voice the character on the cartoon show, but there's really no point having a comedian like Wayne Knight voice a character like Zurg. They could have gotten another unknown.

That's a good point. Still, I think it was an odd choice to have Wayne Knight voice a fairly one note character like Zurg.
