Why did Jim help make Sesame Street?

Dont get get me wrong I love SS. The thing that confuses me is that Jim greatly disliked being thought of as a children's entertainer, and one of his goals was to prove that puppets are more than just kids stuff.

At first, SS was basically an experiment to see if TV could be used to teach preschoolers. I think all that "being thought of as a children's entertainer" mostly started when Jim was trying get TMS on the air.
