I always wished Hoots would return. They reused his puppet in an episode of The Furchester Hotel

Hoots has been retired for nearly 10 years, I don’t think he’s coming back

They didn't fire Kevin, he stepped away on his own terms for the betterment of the future of the show and the character of Elmo.
