Take heart

All your letters are so thoughtful, it's great.
Another way to look at these things? Older birds like myself who've seen many things keep the faith that nothing happens for nothing at all. The U.S. would be two separate nations today if not for the War Between the States (Civil War). A free Europe would not exist today but for the two conflicts there; South Korea and South VietNam are both vibrant, thriving and free, and today's issues will ultimately bring much better lives to tens of millions of people, their children and beyond. It's hard to accept that there will always be bad guys. It's how you meet that and help good prevail that matters in the long run.
I guess John Hinckley was the only one with two names.

I always wondered why we're told we're supposed to remember stuff like this. It seems like it'd be more upsetting and build up hatred rather than simply honoring those who suffered. Of course, I think those people should be honored, but I also think the actual tragedy should be forgotten, and just those affected by it taken into consideration. It'd help, I should think.

Well, that's just the way I feel.
We should never, NEVER forget these things. Just because something is terrible doesn't mean it should be swept under a rug. Here from Canada Sept. 11 was covered extensively and with great respect. I'm sure that was the case in 1963 as well, as my mom says even they went home from school early, and it wasn't even our president!

I know that Kennedy being the "Television" president was of great help to him winning. Nixon was just coming across as too phony, wasn't he? Once he ran, and the voting age was lowered, he tried all of these terribly phony stunts to win favour with the young generation. Blech! I hate the way he tried using the media for his own advantage. He even had The Carpenters play at the White House, as though they were some hip act (don't get me wrong, I'm a fan, I just don't think they were really indicative of the young attitude at the time...too AM rather than FM). Actually, that happened after he got in, obviously, but he was still trying overly hard to be cool, and it's so annoying to see clips of that. (i.e. "Sock it to me!"....ask an older person about that one.)

As many terrible things were said about Clinton, I loved him, and he modeled his presidency on his love of Kennedy. They weren't that far apart, really, both young, vital, did great things internationally, and loved the ladies. I just saw something on the news last night that recently uncovered paperwork indicates that Kennedy was very close to negotiating with Castro, the only president to pull this off. Sad, huh? Imagine what he could've accomplished if this was in the works!

Right on

Right on. Another of my old hippie expressions.
I've never been a party-liner, I'm a registered Independent and take each candidate on their individual merits. We've had the good, the bad and the ugly from all sides of the spectrum. That being said, Nixon was hideous, false, and a boil on the backside of history.
He also had a visceral, personal hatred of Jack Kennedy because he had every personal quality Nixon didn't. Nixon could have used a few hundred sessions with Dr. Phil.
I believe that it's harder for the young people to cope with something like 9/11 because they've been so fortunate to have grown up during a lengthy period of prosperity and peace. They hadn't been fortified by anything. We older folks have developed a hide. Yet, if anything, we, and those of World War vintage, were even more devastated by 9/11 because we're already so well-acquainted with national pain. But we know we can't hide and must move forward. Never forget history - it's who we are, and what we can be. LOL. Stay strong and brave.
Smy, thanx for nice Canadian words re: 1963 and 9/11. Appreciated.

I feel your pain, everyday it's always

"Tonight on live at 5, a bank is robbed of all it's money, a K-Mart burns down with thoudsands injuried and a plane lands in the Everglands. The flight: 401."

European news is much better, we get to see the most important happenings in countries all over. So it isn't quite as gory. "Ich weiss wenn die Tageschau beginnt..." Sorry, I couldn't resist quoting that song by one of my favorite groups, it means "I know when the news program begins."

News

In the old days, before radio and T.V., people didn't know anything till days after things had happened and they didn't trust news till they saw it in the newspaper in black and white in front of them. It must have been much easier on the psyche, I'm sure.

11/22/1984 was Thanksgiving, my mom and I were still in the hospital, grandma had to smuggle pecan pie in to us. I swear that I arrived when I did because my mom was making that pecan pie.

I'm sure this is true. Bless Whatever for occasionally sweeping through and bringing up zillions of Old Cool Threads. Hey, where's 120-second Rebellion??? The newbies would enjoy reading that lol.

It's lots of fun to read the old threads. However, I suspect our grand rebellion disappeared in the Geat Thread Disappearance, but I can go check.
