whats "spin off" mean?

like the topic says! What is it? NOT like a spin off from a TV, i mean a spin off as in like Viacom (Paramount) spun off DreamWorks (live action) & CBS! like does it mean they sold it and NOTHING to do with anymore?

I know dumb question hehe :embarrassed:

I've never heard the term used that way before. Are you maybe thinking of "spawned"? Or "split"?

If I'm even understanding what you are asking...

I think the significant definition is here:

"The distribution by a business to its stockholders of particular assets and especially of stock of another company; also : the new company created by such a distribution"

Actually, a_Mickey_Muppet DOES have it PARTLY right... some people DO use the term "spin off" when refering to a person or group of people from one company decide to part ways and form their own company.
