Yeah, I figured it was a scary thing to do, with foresight.
The girl who gave me a ride was very nice, and kind of quiet like me, but we had a good conversation going up there. The people whose house I stayed out were really super nice (when I left, they told me I could stay there if I returned to Indianapolis, they'd love to have me, and if they heard that I went to Indianapolis and stayed at a hotel I better have a good reason for it.) One other lady was staying at their house for the interview like I was, a university professor from Switzerland. The daughter was in Germany the same time I was although we never met before, so we had a lot to talk about. On Saturday, instead of serving formally on the committee and paticipating in intterviews, the other girl and I stayed in the waiting room and talked to the students and their parents, answering questions about Germany. We were also checking them out, more informally. I have never talked so much in my life before, we talked almost nonstop from 8 AM to 6:30 PM, and had to repeat ourselves a lot when new people came in. It was so exhausting. I was a mess, several times I tried to talk in German (at least Megan knew what I was saying) and once when a new person came in I said "Hi, my name is Emily and this is Megan.." and Megan gave me a weird look and said "Your name isn't Emily." Which of course it isn't, it's Beth. I don't know why I said that, my brain ran away from me. After everyone else left, Megan and I added our input to what the committee members thought about the candidates. They ranked all the students from most to least likely. Then we all left and Megan and I went to see the musical "Fiddler on the Roof" at her old high school. We didn't get to bed until midnight. Sunday was less exciting, I studied for midterm and took a nap. My ride picked me up at 4:00 and we got back around 7:30. I had a really good time, though, it was fabulous to talk to Megan about our experiences in Germany and various foreign languages. I know the information Megan and I gave really helped the candidates and their parents out. So it was all worth it, but I'm still exhausted. I probably won't talk again for a month to make up for all the talking we did on Saturday.
