Water Puppetry

Has anyone ever heard of water puppetry? It's a type of puppetry unique to the Vietnamese and has its roots in the flooding of rice fields (Get it? Roots? Rice? 'Scuse the pun). Anyway, here's a link with some pics:

Do a Google search for "water puppetry" to find more. I thought it was pretty cool, and I'd like to find some place where they perform like this in the US.

I've heard of it. In David Currel's book "The Complete Book of Puppet Theater" they have a very good section on it.

It is beautiful, but I haven't heard of anything like this in the states. I hope someone posts the info here if they do though, it would be interesting to see.

Thar could have been done in one of two ways:

Pepper ghost effect, where the actual puppet is used off screen with a black back ground an bright lights, it's reflection shows as a ghost on the glass by the stage (see Zero in The Nightmare Before Christmas).

Green screen effects where they shoot the puppet and then blend two different films to get the ghost-see-thru effect.

Well, actually, I read somewhere (I think it's in Jim Henson: The Works) that the Ghost of Christmas Past was filmed underwater to make her robes float around... it gave her the illusion of weightlessness, including her clothing and hair.

Now that you mention it, I believe you're right. This thread would be about something different than how they did the Ghost of Xmas Past. BTW, did you ever click the link?
