I don't remember who said it, but the best way to start becoming a puppeteer is to get a puppet and practice.
I am a vice president of the Cincinnati Area Puppetry Guild, and I am still learning new things all the time (I am 40 years young).
So make or build a puppet, write a script, and start a show!
