I can't believe I didn't provide any "behind-the-scenes" info here yet. Anyway, I first got this idea in late october, actually shortly after reading The Muppets: The Movie Junior Novel. I always intended on titling this "Walter's First Muppet Christmas", but at the time I came up with this, I didn't plan on including the road trip element at all. It was going to mainly be the Muppets Christmas party at Kermit's mansion, with the Muppets eventually going skiing somewhere outside the mansion but not very far. And I had always intended on having the Sesame Street Muppets show up at the end, though I also intended on including cameos from Fraggle Rock and Sam and Friends characters.
About a week closer to when I was ready to start writing, I started thinking it would be great to write a road trip fan fic involving Christmas. I don't think the Muppets have ever had a Christmas road trip (has anyone else written such a fan fic). I didn't really want to write two big Muppet Christmas fan fics in one year, and didn't want to wait until next year, so I decided to combine the two ideas.
Also, at first I didn't think about the fact that Kermit's mansion is in L.A., where it doesn't snow. I was going to have it snow at the mansion, but after thinking about where it is located (at least in The Muppets), I figured I'd have to look at my choices: Just have the mansion located somewhere where it snows instead (after all, the movies aren't totally cannon, especially the newest one, and also, The Muppets depicts the theater as being located in L.A., while the Gladys Knight episode and It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie both show it being located somewhere where it can snow), have it snow due to a snow machine or some other effect, chosen to make it feel more Christmasey, or do what I did and not have it snow there. But I had really wanted to do that gag where '80s Robot takes Walter away when taking Walter's coat and throwing him into a closet full of other Muppets, so I had him wear a winter coat anyway.
Also, you may notice that the characters I mentioned as being put in the closet by '80s Robot are all failed characters.
