I make my own control rods. As with much of my puppet crafting I use an amalgamation of different techniques I've seen used. The end result is basically a metal rod with a wooden handle that has been coated with Tool Dip to give it a nice finish.
I know what you mean about being nervous. I am always a little nervous when I start a new puppet. There is always that fear that you'll botch something. In my case I almost always do but I learn a lot in the process. I've found I need to take notes so I remember what I've learned from those mistakes.
Don't stress too much. You're learning and you can always get more materials and make a new and BETTER puppet!
