I have been investigating this... I am currently enrolled at UWM in Wisconsin, I am a theatre BA. I was originally in the BFA Stage Management track, but dropped it this semester. BFA takes a majority of time and you have to be extremely dedicated.
Me, being a non traditional student, could not attend school 12-15 hours a day in a BFA program, hold a job and maintain any sort of sanity. So I am currently in the BA program, taking GER classes (those pesky anoying things like math and science, which Theatre folk never use) and building a good base. Next year I will then be able to audition at UCONN and will hopefully have enough money saved to take the required 15 credit hours per semester in the puppetry program. I have to stress, you must be very dedicated! You will still have your course work, in addition to any shows you will have to build and perform in. So make sure you have the funds.
I don't want to sound discouraging, but make sure you do your homework before applying, yes, they do take a limited number of students into the puppetry BFA, but you can also get into the BA program and go on from there.
(Taken from UCONN's website...)
"Unlike many fields of study in which students take few courses in their major during their early semesters, BFA Dramatic Arts Students begin intensive training in their chosen field immediately upon entering UConn. In a BFA program, approximately two-thirds of your college courses are in your chosen field of study. Most of the remaining credits you will take constitute the university's General Education Requirements in writing, math, history, humanities, science and social science. You will take from one to three general education courses per semester, depending on your semester standing."
It is also very expensive for an out of state student... $29,828 per yr on the average and that does not include $750-$1000 per year on books... AND, Theatre books are very expensive!
I hope this helps!
