I’ve just dug out my DVD of Vol. 1.

OK, I’ll admit I was wrong about the NTSC bit with the DVDs.

Although (bearing in mind I was watching it on the old TV in my room originally) I can see where I got it from. The picture on the episodes is noticeably softer than in the compilations (compare the bits in the credits where the sign goes up, and the audience’s “Why don’t you get things started” on the comp. and the Star Wars ep, for example) and the colour balance does feel more “NTSC conversion” than 1970s videotape. And possibly a bit too much DVNR was used as well.

Next time I’ll actually go back and check before I get all worked up about something like this on the ‘net.

Sorry.

(although I still find it odd how blurry the VHS set is compared to my 20-ish year old copy of the Leo Sayer ep, or my (even older) off-air copy of the Goodies LWT episode “Bigfoot” (the oldest VHS home recording I have) . You’d think an old tape like that would be worse quality, not better than a “proper” release. Don’t suppose the DW Restoration Team could have a go at any future releases? )

Well, the BBC (used to) have higher technical standards than pretty much anyone else  There's a story that when they decided to re-run the original "Star Trek" series on its 25 anniversary, they ordered up PAL copies from Paramount. When the tapes arrived, the standards conversion was found to be so bad that the BBC went back to Paramount, got NTSC copies and did the job themselves! Sadly, this no longer seems to be the case - the BBC2 "Buffy" airings are a pretty good example of bad NTSC->PAL conversions...

Anyway, if you'd like to drop me an email, I was wondering if you'd be interested in a trade? I'd be particularly interested in seeing stuff like the BBC repeats, not to mention "The Goodies"! I've also got a project on the go that may be of interest to you
