Here's an even worse one - my best friend (IRL) had absolutely no idea who Jim Henson was when I brought him up in conversation once.

Ouch. That still doesn't make your friend stupid or bad though; I've had very close real-life friends with interests (Star Trek, Harry Potter, classic rock) which I didn't share at all. Your buddy's not knowing of Jim Henson would be akin to my not knowing of the original Star Trek producers; our friendships are no less real for lack of that knowledge.
