23 October: Annie (1982)

Ah, what a voice on Aileen Quinn! Like a glass of fresh-squeezed Florida orange juice.

Within a few years of one another, two films, two surprising choices of director: for Annie, John Huston! For Star Trek, the Motion Picture, Robert Wise! Wise directed the Sound of Music....so, why get him to do such a project late in his career? John Huston had directed everything but musicals, and was 73, so....? In both cases the results were interesting, subtly different from anything else in theatres at the time. I have yet to see Wise's most recent re-editing of his Star Trek. I think the reason Annie fell short of some expectations at the time was because because Huston's pretty offering was also a little too austere for a movie musical.
