Iv'e heard some people in here ask some questions about why Bruno was created. While it does say in some books, such as Carrol Spinney's book, that Bruno was created as a way to move Oscar around, many of you believe this isn't true because Oscar has been seen walking around with his feet sticking out the bottoms of his trashcan. Also Oscar has been seen around Sesame Street, and in some inserted sketches, without his trashcan and had no problem moving around that way. Well I was reading my copy of "The Wisdom of Big Bird" yesterday, and it dawned on me why Bruno was created. Carroll mentions about how he used to always do live tours with Big Bird, when Big Bird would perform on stage. He always wished he could peform his other charachter Oscar on stage, but he had no way of getting him onstage without Carroll being seen. So they came up with Bruno, as a way Oscar could make on stage live appearances. Apparantley they figured it would also be a cool idea to use Bruno on the show, and so they did. So it really is true, Bruno was created to mobilize Oscar, but not so much on the show but in live productions. Bruno just came to the show because they figured he'd make a cool new SS charachter for all the kids at home to see too. Hope this clears everything up. :grouchy: :grouchy: :grouchy:

Interesting. That would make sense. It turned Oscar into a sort of puppet/costume for live appearances.

On a side note, Caroll Spinney once said in an interview that he really considered Big Bird to be a puppet and not a costume because he operated Big bird's head with his hand, and didn't wear it as a mask.

At Hooperfans site, in the section for the Sesame Street Live! album, I noticed that in the cast credits the only muppets who appeared in that album were Big Bird, mr. Snuffleupagus, Cookie Monster, and grover. Assuming that the recording was of an actual live performance there must have been a way for normal-sized muppets (Cookie Monster and Grover)to have appeared.

Oddly enough, at Sesame Street Live Oscar normally walsk around with his feet out of the bottom of the can, and is able to stick his head out of the can. There must have been a way for that to have been done for live performances. As far as I know bruno never appeared in any Sesame Street Live show.

Whenever Oscar is seen walking around with his feet sticking out, he is performed by a midget inside a costume, so it wouldn't be the same thing really. Carroll Spinney or someone like that wouldn't have been able to do that and have Oscar pop up.

I know that a midget performed oscar when he was walking with his feet sticking out of the can. But when he does that, he also sits down and pops the top half of him out of the can. This can be done with some editing, but at Sesame Street Live editing couldn't be done. I wonder how this is done at Sesame Street Live. I guess i could figure it out if I saw a new Sesame Street live show, but I haven't seen one since 1997.

It's weird that a Bruno suit wasn't built for sesame Street Live.

In the book Wisdom of Big Bird and The Darkness of Oscar the Grouch , the man who played Tattoo off of "Fantasay Island", used to play Oscar in many of the episodes of Sesame Street which was pretty interesting. You can actually see Oscar figure skating and with his legs in "Christmas Eve On Sesame Street." Bruno was included in the special "Big Bird's Birthday", and on "Julie On Sesame Street" there were many dancing Oscar's like he would walk around but they were actually very large even Oscar's Trash Can in the opening number of the special was fairly large.
