TMS Season 1 Memories and Looking Ahead

One of my favorite bits from season 1 are Fozzie's monologues. Of course these would become a staple, but I thought the season 1 monos were especially funny. Statler & Waldorf were at their best too.

"Ameoba!"

"Sorry, no foreign words!"

"The word is only foreign to you!"

Well, they sort of phased out after the first season. I mean they still had those occassionally, but after the first season would do different acts instead of just standing there telling jokes. In a way, I guess the change was good. It might have gotten boring, if they would have just had a monologue in almost every ep for five seasons. I'm looking forward to seeing what all he does in season 2.

I have mixed feelings about Season 1. You can really see a glimmer of greatness to come, but it all seems so very hokey. The writers and performers had not quite gotten the pitch of many of the characters, and in the first half or so, you can really see that everyone is trying to figure it out as they go. The sketches aren't as funny, the guest stars aren't as lucid, and characters like Fozzie, Gonzo, and Piggy all look a little more "homemade" than in later seasons.

Having said that, though, I will say that there are moments of pure gold. When something works, it works. There are some brilliant performances by guest stars (Rita Moreno, Lena Horne, Candice Bergen), and towards the end of the season, you can really see that this is something very special.

I think TMS didn't hit its stride until Season 2. It seems that in the second go-round, everything just fell into place.

If the Panel Discussions continued after season one, I think that those sketches would have been great opportunities for J.P. Grosse and Fleet Scribbler to have been used.

I think they could have also been wonderful opportunities for Sesame Street characters to make occasional cameos.

Yeah, the use of the Sesame Street characters with the other, more "mature" characters in the Muppet Christmas Special was brilliant.

Doc: "Hey, what is this?"
Bert: "Where we come from, this is small talk"
