Not to mention that the videos for "Body Language" and "I Want to Break Free" were not well received in the US. The former was really racy & sensual, & the latter showed the band members in drag. I suppose it was an attempt to stay with the times, as you said, and make lots of music videos that could be on MTV. But it didn't work.
The video for "I Want to Break Free" was actually a parody of a soap opera in the UK (Coronation Street, which apparently is still in production). In Europe dressing in drag really wasn't a big deal in the '80s and was commonly used in humor/entertainment. Not so much in the U.S.... (which contributed to Freddie Mercury's refusal to tour in the U.S. by the mid-'80s).
