I'm definitely going with the first choice: whenever you have a successful TV series, doing a movie on it only enhances the "magic" the show endeared itself with to us, plus there's always something exciting about seeing your favorite characters on the big screen (still wish something came into fruition regarding a Courage the Cowardly Dog movie); whereas when you try to do a TV series based on a movie, the series always falls flat of measuring up to the original movie (M*A*S*H being the exception, of course).

Yeah some of that just depends on the budget the TV series gets. It's just never going to look as impressive as a movie. And you often don't have the same writers as the film so the characters seem off.

M.A.S.H. is a rare instance where I like the TV series much more than the original movie. Don't get me wrong, I like rebellious, hippie characters but the "heroes" in the M.A.S.H. film were just too mean spirited and sexist; I just couldn't get into them. Though I will say I actually like the way they portrayed the Catholic priest. He's not a bad guy, it's just that he's with an organization that was becoming ineffective.

In contrast, the characters in the TV series were much more balanced. They were rebellious without being total jerks, lol.

Agree with the sentiments posted above. A movie based off of a TV series can have a higher budget and be a nice way to cap off the series, while some TV series based on movies don't really have anywhere to go plot-wise.

That's another good point. Sometimes a story is supposed to end at a specific point and trying to continue it in a series is just anti climatic.

This isn't exactly the same thing but the original V mini series had a very satisfying ending. But then they had to go make a weekly TV series and you could tell they were struggling with where to take the story. Plus as I said, the budget just wasn't there and thus the FX wasn't as impressive and the cast was chopped in half.

What would you consider Jimmy Neutron? Technically there were shorts, then a movie, then a show. I personally hated the movie but loved the show. I wasn't all that fond of the lilo and stitch movie but liked the show. I wasnt all that fond of the Emporer's New Groove, but liked the show.

I used to love the Simpsons, but the movie was kinda meh. I love Doug, but the movie was kinda meh. I love the Rugrats, but the first movie was kinda meh (the Paris one was Good though.

I think those are examples of movies coming a little too late, after a series had already jumped the shark.

Movies based on TV series, because that includes the Muppet Movie, and The Addams Family. TV shows based on movies then to become (shudders) The Penguins Of Madagascar.
