I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, and I've also posted this question on Yahoo Answers but can't change it to make it more specific, but perhaps somebody can help an artistically-challenged puppeteer out here.

I'm in the planning stages of getting a new puppet character to go along with another character I have. This character, which I already have in my possession, is a small reddish-brown otter [built by Russ Walko, picture for reference here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/33190275@N07/3237324534/] that would the straight man to this other character being the comic (very much an Abbott and Costello-like dynamic between them). What could be a color that contrasts with the otter's reddish-brown fur [or whatever color that fur is, I'll leave it up to you guys to decide] and uptight personality for the color of the fur of this new character and his goofy/wacky personality?

On Yahoo Answers, green seems to be the general consensus. I'm just concerned about the characters being too close to Bob & Larry in color, but it isn't that big a deal for me. Someone has also suggested a bright red with a bit of yellow mixed into the hue. I can't really decide? What do you guys all think for a color to contrast with the current otter puppet (see picture)?

I think some sort of shade of blue would contrast rather nicely with the reddishness of the otter puppet, and since he's not exactly a bright or vibrant red, I wouldn't go with a bright nor vibrant shade of blue either.

Just my thoughts on "color coordinating", lol.

Interesting. Thankfully, since the puppet is going to be a monster any color can go. I'm going to wait to see what other colors everyone suggests before I come to a complete decision... and besides, what fur colors Russ has is going to play a part in this as well.

I agree with Snowthy, blue is definetly the way I would go. I think red and green are associated with too many other things already (Christmas! ) and I don't think green would stand out against the red as well as the blue would. You want them to go nicely, but not look SO nice together that it takes away from the characters. Blue is a vibrant and electric color which resonates with a bright personality - depending on the shade. Dark blue would imply a gloomy character, while light blue is more cheerful.

I don't know...for me, blue isn't all that zany (and for Monster puppets is all too common, i.e. the Sesame monster crowd). I would think about a purple or maybe even orange but neither a neon or bright shade. Green is the opposite of Red on the color wheel so that is probably why most would pick it as the opposite but I agree it doesn't scream comic to me either.

That's exactly what I assumed, since it was mentioned. I'd be all for it but I really don't know. Here's what the puppet is going to look like to a degree: http://www.flickr.com/photos/33190275@N07/3362303300/in/photostream/, I'm not a fan of the gold fur as it seems to dark for me to showcase a comic personality. I'm starting to side with blue or maybe even orange or bright green.
