What song do you think is the quintessential Christmas song, a song that defines the Christmas season? Personally, I don't know what song I think defines Christmas, there's so many that do that.

What do you think?

My personal favourite has always been: Silent Night.
The lyrics represent the true story and meaning of Christmas.

It's either that or "Grandma got run over by a reindeer".:big_grin:

I have favorite versions of "Silent Night", Jewel, Wilson Phillips, and Gloriana. I even love Little Big Town's version of "Go Tell It On The Mountain" too.:flirt:

I always think of Silent Night when I think of Christmas songs. And when I was a little kid, I loved Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

If we're talking about a real definition, this is both funny and quite accurate... but as for traditional songs I think of "Deck the Halls". It's so cheerful!

I definitely agree with GonzoLover85 here. "Silent Night" is definitely one of my favorites. Of course, I love all the great Christmas carols and some other more modern Christmas songs as well- "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "The Christmas Song", "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree", "White Christmas" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas" are definitely some other favorites.
But I also really love Christmas carols like "Joy to the World", "Little Drummer Boy", "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear", "Angels We Have Heard on High", "The First Noel", "Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne" (WOW! This one has such great lyrics!), "Do You Hear What I Hear?", "O Little Town of Bethlehem", "We Three Kings", "O Come, O Come Emmanuel", "Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus", "Away in a Manger", "Go Tell It On the Mountain" and tons others. Those are some classics that I definitely like to sing at least once during the Christmas season (and pretty much anytime else during the year, for that matter.)- But I would say one of my all time favorites is definitely "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing"- such powerful lyrics from Charles Wesley here.
"Christ by highest Heaven adored, Christ the everlasting Lord, Late in time, behold Him come, Offspring of a virgin's womb, Vielded in flesh the God-head see, Hail the Incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus our Emmanuel..." and
"Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of Earth, Born to give them second birth. Hark, the herald angels sing- Glory to the newborn King!"
WOW! -I love it.
Another more modern and powerful Christmas song I would recommend- "Christmas Has Its Cradle". Again, very powerful lyrics ("Christmas has its cradle and Easter has its cross.") speaking to the true meaning of Christmas - which originates with the birth of Jesus Christ but really culminates in His death and Resurrection at Easter. The hope of salvation for mankind- the peace on Earth and goodwill to men that He came to bring is what I celebrate at Christmas and Easter and all through the year!

Honestly, I think the song that defines Christmas the best is the rare 1950's Novelty song, "I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas." If you ever hear it, you know what I mean... One lyric that sticks out for me is
"Peace on Earth! And Good Will to men/
And just at that moment someone slugs Uncle Ben."

But as far as I'm concerned, it just ain't Christmas until I hear Snoopy vs. The Red Baron.

I don't know about anyone else, but The Christmas Can-Can by Straight No Chaser sums up Christmas in the 20th/21st Century.
