The Smurf's Triumphant return!

The film industry is going through a rut, just as it did in the 1950s. In both cases, a new technology was sucking up all the attention (first Television and now the Internet). And as a result, Hollywood films started relying more on gimicry and less on quality. In the 1950s it was 3D, color film, Cinemascope, even Smell-O-Vision, all at the expense of decent storytelling. Nowadays it's CGI and (surprise!) 3D that's getting too much emphasis.

You make a great point about gimmicks, though some of those in the 50's (like the ones that went with William Castle films) sound fun! And I think even the B movies of the 50's had more personality to them than the big budget films we have now. And you bet your life (everyone) that I like all 50's music better than what's popular now.

Oh sure I mean my Dad and I love watching the alien or monster films from the '50s; despite their cheesiness, they have a lot of character, lol.

Hehe, yes, you can't go wrong with them! And the trailers for them - they REALLY knew how to sell 'em back then!

To the surprise of no one, this movie is being railed by critics as generic.

Surprisingly, it's doing well... (hits head sharply and painfully on desk ala Don Music).

One review DOES say that the worst parts of the movie were put directly in the promos. Still... I don't even have the cash to see Captain America (a film people actually LIKE and sounds amazing, and I missed Thor and I'm not happy that I did), so why bother seeing something I probably won't enjoy anyway.

They also say that Neil actually gives a great performance, as does Hank....

my gf and I JUST got back from this movie (3D thats all they had it in, didnt bother me tho)...i liked it, not a Disney film but it was ok i smiled at some parts and laughed if somthing doesnt make u smile u dont have a sole!

I'm in I might sneak in mode. But somehow I feel the McDonalds commercial captures Smurfieness better. If there is a sequel, I hope for the love of Smurf they smurf the smurfs in their own time period.

However, the fact we're getting the comics in the US is really making me smile. If this movie is succesful, we'll have them all published. And I want Smurfs and the Magic Flute on US or at least Region 1 DVD. Haven't seen that since I was a kid.

went and saw the movie yesterday, was not half bad. loved the fact that they had a mention to the original maker of the smurfs comic. Don't always listen to the film critics, you really need to see a movie first before making any judgment on it.

I'm known for liking some pretty bad movies, but I really don't want to see this one. I'm sure I'm going in with the "This can't possibly be good" expectations, and it might surprise me... still, with a Marvel super Hero with a movie that has great reviews and good buzz I'd much rather see, I'd tend to see that first. After that, the only other movie I plan on seeing this year is painfully obvious, and need not be mentioned. Though I might give Lion King 3-D a look. That's always been one of my favorite modern Diz films. I just hope that awkward music number isn't added in.
