I can recall a muppet skit involving two gangster like muppets who were waiting for Lefty to come and give the secret knock on the door. Different numbers of knocks came on the door and also a voice calling out. Then they finally had to prompt him to give the correct number of knocks. Then they let him in, it wasn't Lefty the Salesman who always did business with Ernie, but a short, fat blue muppet shaking with fear who said he forgot the secret knock. He sounded like he was voiced by Jim.
Then the other two went out saying he had better remember the knock when they want to come in. But he panics when they give the knock and races out the other door.
Who remembers this piece?

I sure do remember this one! Jerry Nelson and Richard Hunt are great as the two thugs who wait for Lefty to show up. And poor Lefty has no business
hanging out with these two. He's a bundle of nerves shaking in his pants, worried that if he makes the smallest mistake, these two might rub him out!
He's so nervous he can't remember the secret knock to let the two goons back in. By the end of the skit, the two goons are banging on the door "Come on, Lefty, let us in, you dope!", but Lefty runs off in a blaze of panic. "I never wanted to get hooked up with these guys in the first place! WAAAAAHHHHH!!!!"

Heaven help Lefty if these two ever caught up with him.

Ah yes skits like this were probably the closest Sesame Street ever came to what we would call dark humour.
Well as dark as could be allowed for a children's show.:stick_out_tongue:
