I love Donald, but to fully appreciate the character, again we must turn to the comics. The character is a LOT more complex (they were going to water down Scrooge's personality for a series of cartoons in the 50's that were never made, what does that tell you?). In Scrooge McDuck comics, he plays a role similar to Launchpad, the other adult who's not quite as mature as the kids surprisingly were. As for his solo adventures, he was a lot more calculated in his mayhem, though he still always lost in the end.

And that's not even mentioning what Italy did.

I'm disappointed that Boom stopped publishing these stories (possibly for the time being, possibly forever, I dunno)... but there are 2 varient adventures that came out of reader complaints about how much of a loser Donald was treated like in his comics. So in 1969 (and we've just gotten a small taste of this right now) they came up with Paperinik (Donald's Italian name is something like Paperino, we know him as Duck Avenger)... originally he was a vengeful soul... his origin story has him donning a costume, stealing a priceless Faberge egg from Scrooge and planting it on Gladstone. Shortly after he became a full on Batman style hero (Gyro designed his gadgets). We got a short storyline featuring Duck Avenger teaming up with other Disney characters turned Super Heroes (With Super Goof, which we had comics of in the US). italy had a long running dark series of comics featuring him fighting intergalactic menaces... I wish Boom would get a hold of some of those... Then there's the Double Duck series where Donald Duck is a sleeper agent for a secret agency (from what I heard, it's revealed Scrooge actually owns it).

I still say Disney should get off its butt and make DTV animated movies of these things. They did it with Tinkerbelle (her movies are based off of similar Italian comics).
I agree with you on Disney needing to do some newer Animated stuff with Donald and these comics that are coming out. I would love to see a Mickey, Minnie and Goofy series where they get caught up in certain adventures. I wouldn't mind seeing (and this character hasn't had any type of animated history unless in other countries is Eega Beeva) He would be a cool character to bring to animated shows of Mickey and friends.

But i love Uncle Scrooge and Ducktales forever. I have been buying all the new Uncle Scrooge and Donald and Freinds comics since Boom started them off. I bought from ebay the reissiued of "Donald Duck Adventures" that were a whole bunch of Carl Barks comics from the 50's and others from that times. But yes they need to do a series and hope for the best they can make it work and not mess it up.

The one thing that still bugs me about Disney is the fact that the big 3 (Mickey Donald and Goofy), while in the public eye, are only there because of their preschool series. I think they need a project for older kids anyway, but it would be great to see them take advantage of the super hero movie fad with either a Duck Avenger DTV project or TV series. Sure, they have Spidey and the rest of Marvel under their belt, but they still could use the power of their own timeless classic characters to make something all their own.

Besides, if they can have Tinkerbell for the girls, they can have Duck Avenger and the Ultra Squad for the boys.

It won't ever happen until Mickey Mouse Clubhouse goes off the air. We need to write DTV and tell them that the older kids would love to have a Mickey, Doanld and Goofy series. But they won't listen to us.

Well, that's the thing I'm HATING about Disney right now. Other than their little profitable preschool clatch, they barely have a hand in TV animation. Other than Phineas and Ferb that is, and something tells me that'll be subject to the arbitrary production cap crap, and end it's run (rumor has it season 3 is Da end)... and Fish Hooks (the only other cartoon they're doing at this period) looks UGLY, derivative, and not at all funny.

They full well know olda boys like Mickey and co, but they don't even have the right project to do, nor the way to do it. I REALLY wish that they gave Pixar a stock in their TV animation department. Plus, I'm THRILLED we're out of the DTV cheapquel phase, but I really think there was also a lot of potential DTV projects (similar to the wonderful Mickey's 3 Musketeers) that can't happen. Only reason why they bothered with Tinkerbell in the first place was that it was too far into production to shut it down. Mickey and co NEED another family/animation fan project.

Now, to tie this back into the theme, I would love for Disney to do a 2-D style animated film based on the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, as long as we're doing comic book movies. or at least a more comic accurate Scrooge series without Launchpad, Beagles with specific names and personalities, and all that. Not that I don't LOVE those characters, I do... I just want to see something more along the lines of having Donald as a regular character, and more appearances of the likes of Gladstone Gander (who REALLY wasn't used in Ducktales nearly enough... 2 Speaking roles?)

That said, I'm surprised ANYONE would have though Gizmoduck to be Gyro, when he's not even a duck at ALL. He has been characterized as a chicken.
Theoretically, if Gyro and Gizmoduck were the same, then the fact that they are different species would be a good way to throw people off on his true identity.

Just wanted to post to say that I LOVE DuckTales and Uncle Scrooge McDuck and that whole part of the Disney universe in general. DuckTales is such a great cartoon series and Nintendo Entertainment System video game as well. (There's actually 2 of them- both are fun.)
It's been fun seeing the DuckTales comics popping up recently in Boom! Comics. And I recently picked up a copy of "DuckTales The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp" on VHS at a thrift store- I hadn't seen that in years, but it was still just as great as I remembered it.

I recall the film fondly, so I'll have to check it out again!
And right on about the video game! (Never tried 2 yet) Great game! Ah, the memories! And I always loved Scrooge in Mickey's Christmas Carol, too, which was my introduction to him.

That's when i was introduce to him too was in Mickey's Christmas Carol. That's when i knew i fell in love with a character that might have a mean streak but inside you know he's the most loveable guy to hang out with.
