Hard to believe, it was 60 years since Scrooge's first appearance as a character in comic books. He first starred in Christmas on Bear Mountain as quite a different character than he is today. he was much closer to his name sake (even scoffing Christmas). While originally designed as a one shot character, Carl Barks (the creator) decided to bring him back. And eventually he became the star of his own comics. And in earlier stories, he was quite nasty to Donald Duck, and often others.
In time he bacme the much softer, albiet still shrewd Business man we know today. His exploits have taken him all over the world, and ammounted his cash at five multiplujillion, nine impossibidillion, seven fantasticatrillion dollars and sixteen cents.
Scrooge always was warey of Donald. Scrooge once said he was worried that if Donald became the owner of his estate, Donald would be liable to fritter it away. He has more trust in Huey, Dewey, and Louie. But that's not to say he's greedy. Every single coin, especially his number one dime, is a badge of honor that he treasures. A battle scar if you will. He was born into a poor Scottish family, and worked his way up from the bottom by being "Smarter than the Smarties, and Tougher than the toughies." But he would risk his fortune if it meant that anyone in his family was in terrible danger.
Over the years, he faced dangerous adversaries, like the Beagle Boys (who had personalities added for their appearance in Ducktales, a similar move to giving the Ninja Turtles different colored masks), Flintheart Glomgold (originally designed as a South African, but was changed to become a fellow Scottsman in Ducktales due to political problems in the area at the time of the show's premire), Magica DeSpell (designed to be a different kind of witch, more seductive. in fact, in the comics, she actually tried to seduce Scroogie from time to time), and John D Rockerduck (only seen in the comics).
His first animated appearance was in 1967 (his 20th anniversary, mind you) in Scrooge McDuck and his money. In this, he teaches the value of money to his beloved Nephews. of course, a feature cartoon was planned in the 50's, but went no where, and a strange Proto-Scrooge type charactrer appeared in the War Propaganda film Spirit of 43, as the Good side of Donald, who tells him to save every penny to fight the Axis.
Years later, he would appear in Mickey's Christmas Carol, the first time he was performed by Alan Young. While in Soccermainia (which came out just before Ducktales) he was voiced by Will Ryan, who had a different take on his accent. This lead to the famous series, Ducktales.
So happy 60th, Scrooge McDuck.
