Hard to believe, it was 60 years since Scrooge's first appearance as a character in comic books. He first starred in Christmas on Bear Mountain as quite a different character than he is today. he was much closer to his name sake (even scoffing Christmas). While originally designed as a one shot character, Carl Barks (the creator) decided to bring him back. And eventually he became the star of his own comics. And in earlier stories, he was quite nasty to Donald Duck, and often others.

In time he bacme the much softer, albiet still shrewd Business man we know today. His exploits have taken him all over the world, and ammounted his cash at five multiplujillion, nine impossibidillion, seven fantasticatrillion dollars and sixteen cents.

Scrooge always was warey of Donald. Scrooge once said he was worried that if Donald became the owner of his estate, Donald would be liable to fritter it away. He has more trust in Huey, Dewey, and Louie. But that's not to say he's greedy. Every single coin, especially his number one dime, is a badge of honor that he treasures. A battle scar if you will. He was born into a poor Scottish family, and worked his way up from the bottom by being "Smarter than the Smarties, and Tougher than the toughies." But he would risk his fortune if it meant that anyone in his family was in terrible danger.

Over the years, he faced dangerous adversaries, like the Beagle Boys (who had personalities added for their appearance in Ducktales, a similar move to giving the Ninja Turtles different colored masks), Flintheart Glomgold (originally designed as a South African, but was changed to become a fellow Scottsman in Ducktales due to political problems in the area at the time of the show's premire), Magica DeSpell (designed to be a different kind of witch, more seductive. in fact, in the comics, she actually tried to seduce Scroogie from time to time), and John D Rockerduck (only seen in the comics).

His first animated appearance was in 1967 (his 20th anniversary, mind you) in Scrooge McDuck and his money. In this, he teaches the value of money to his beloved Nephews. of course, a feature cartoon was planned in the 50's, but went no where, and a strange Proto-Scrooge type charactrer appeared in the War Propaganda film Spirit of 43, as the Good side of Donald, who tells him to save every penny to fight the Axis.

Years later, he would appear in Mickey's Christmas Carol, the first time he was performed by Alan Young. While in Soccermainia (which came out just before Ducktales) he was voiced by Will Ryan, who had a different take on his accent. This lead to the famous series, Ducktales.

So happy 60th, Scrooge McDuck.

What a great tribute to Scrooge McDuck, Dr. Tooth. My Dad loves Scrooge. He used to buy the Uncle Scrooge comics a lot when he was younger. And I continue to get him the comics for his birthday, Father's Day, and Christmas.

Scrooge McDuck is my favorite Disney character of all time. I loved his performance in Mickey's Christmas Carol and how Alan Young, (Wilbur from Mr. Ed), performs that Scottish sounding voice of his. Ducktales was a great show where he became a caring Uncle to Huey, Dewey, and Louie who still has a love of money and can be a tough businessman. Even though Ducktales is canceled, Scrooge does make guest appearances in shows like House of Mouse and certain Disney Christmas specials and movies.

Here's a fact. In a classic Woody Woodpecker cartoon, it turned out Woody too had a rich uncle named Scrooge. When Woody was living in a freezing poor house, he decided to go live with his Uncle Scrooge. And his uncle was so greedy and stingy and nasty, Woody decided to go back home to his freezing house.

After taking Survey of Sequential and learning more about Carl Barks, I discovered a newfound love for Ducktales. I wish I had some of the Donald Duck and Scrooge Mc Duck comics by the "good duck artist".

Scrooge is a great character and Ducktales was a great show. It was fun and adventureous, appealing to both boys and girls. They really don't make shows like that anymore.

I remember the most wonderful thing about Scrooge was written in a letters page in the back of one of the Ducktales comics. It said that Scrooge McDuck would never profit off of Drugs, alcohol, or weoponry. That just makes me love the character all the more. While he can be a ruthless buisnessman (duck?) at times, he would not cheat nor do anything dishonest to get his fortune. Glomgold, however....

I think my favorite villain in the cartoon is the A group of Beagles, Burger, Bigtime, Bouncer, and Baggy. I just loved them in the episode with Gyro Gearloose's furnature transportation ray. But my favorite Beagle episode would be "Beagle Mania" in which the boys try to steal the prize money from the Screaming Sky McFly battle of the Bands show. ma Beagler really comes out on top of it all, showing that she's the one that wears the pants in the crime family. Plus all the hidden Beatles references. Burger was about to eat this large Strawberry Bubblegum cake and muttered, "Ooh Boy! Strawberry Feilds Forever!"

But that's not to discount the other star villain, Magica DeSpell. Ever since she was first created, she was after the number one dime. Not because it's "lucky," but being in the hands of one of the most powerful multiplujillionaires, it is said to contain the power of every business decision Scrooge ever made. In Send in the Clones, she successfully got the dime, and traded it back to Scrooge, unwillingly, for a worthless one.

I have always been a BIG Scrooge McDuck/Ducktale's fan, and it has always been my favorite cartoon, this past year i have really been getting into the comics with me starting off with the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck and the companion B and C chaper book too! the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is a story worth a movie it's self! It's that good! i have collected a few old comics at flea markets, and picked up many of the newer reprinted books at comic book stores and i've just pre ordered Scrooges Quest, and some other ducktales comics from Barnsandnobles today! I can't wait to read them! Of course i hope to hear of the last remaining episodes of DuckTales to be released on dvd as well as hopefully the ducktales movie too!

I looooove Ducktales. Not only is it one of my favorite TV shows, but also one of my favorite video games as well.

Why don't they show it on TV anymore? They still show other Disney cartoons from the time, such as Chip 'N' Dale Rescue Rangers, TaleSpin, and Gummi Bears...

You mean on Toon Disney? Well, it's all about how Disney owns shows Saban produced (especially Power Rangers) and how they dropped JetIX off of ABC Family for no good reason, and had to dump it on Toon Disney. People are apparently flipping over it, and still are. I don't have cable, so I just watch the old VHS's. I still need to get the DVD's.
