There are a lot of haunts around Freehold and Englishtown where Bruce grew up. The closest I ever got to him was at Giants Stadium. There was 1/4 a mile and 80 thousand others between him and me.
Bon Jovi came from Sayreville, but that town is pretty run-down. Their big breakthrough was 1987 Slippery When Wet. When they were still local heroes, they almost played at our high school.
Back around 1992 or so, a co-worker invited me to a block party. I didn’t feel out of place being the only white guy there. But there was an upcoming rap group called Naughty By Nature, and I said hi to a girl about my age named Dana Owens. A year later she became Queen Latifah.
