Yeah, again, he was really passionate about his work and he wanted to pull out the best in everyone around him, he just wanted every one to do there best job. so that's all he means when he being tough, and I think everyone around him under stood that.

Yeah, he wanted to make sure you were really serious about working with the Muppets and that you weren't there on a big ego trip.

Maybe you could kind of put it this way: if you were trying to get into the ranks of the Muppet crew, Richard would make you pole-vault over a high stone wall...but he'd be waiting on the other side to catch you as you came over.
