I loved my cabbage patch kids! I still do, actually. They're on our spare bed. I have a "preemie," a set of twins, and a Phillies player. I'm always happy to see them!

I always hated the names that the CPK came with. .
I agree. I was lucky- mine was named Mary Jane, which wasn't too bad. I kept her name. But I wasnt so great at naming them myself. One poor doll I named myself was called Katie Pink Blanket- and I already had another doll called Katie.

The behavior of parents during the original CPK availability was absolutely appalling - scrambling and fighting to own these things for their kids at any cost, both financial and personal. Their conduct in stores and toward each other was shocking, and I do mean most parents (my own contemporaries). In addition, our company was doing commercial printing for Coleco, including the packaging for CPKs, and despite parents' spending ridiculous amounts of money for CPKs Coleco went under, defaulting to many creditors, including us. We never got a dime of the hundreds of thousands of dollars owed us, and we were not the only creditors to receive nothing, because there was nothing to hand out once it was all said and done. The whole thing represented the absolute worst of American materialism. Therefore, I can't look at a CPK. I would commit murder most foul, can't stand their little stuffed guts. But, most of you are too young to know or care about that. Enjoy your CPKs; not throwing cold water on those who like them. It just brings back some foul memories indeed.

Looking back, it is just amazing what some parents would do for a stuffed toy. I've seen file footage of it and it is just unbelievable. :attitude:

Right, it was something else. I saw it in person in the stores, and am sorry to say that some of my own friends and acquaintances joined the fray too. It was the '80s, the beginning of two decades of the economy riding very high indeed, and ordinary Americans having more money to spend than any other generation before it. It doesn't bring out the best in people, and owning CPKs became a competition. I also have many friends who grew up during the Great Depression - even after all these years they can't believe the material stuff that people spend on, just gobs of unnecessary Stuff. The one benefit of a slowing economy now is the potential for people to go back to doing with a bit less and paying attention to each other more. She said hopefully lol.
