This is around 1972

New characters:

*Purple monster: Looks a lot like Tamenilla Grinderfall, but with big bulgy yellow eyes, dark purple fur (on body and a bit of it on top of her head)

*Whatnot Quartet

1) Same puppet used for Southern Colonel, only he’s redesigned with short brown hair, big nose,

2) Looks somewhat similar to Ernie, only he’s white, has big round eyes, pale round nose, straw hat, green bowtie, red hair, yellow buttons on stomach (no clothing, except for a plaid vest. He looks a bit like a scarecrow)

3) Green old man, big nose, white mustache, bald (looks similar to the octopus from the “Octopus’ Garden” number from The Ed Sullivan Show)

4) Big, cone-head with very little hair on top; big round body/torso, red necktie, small beady eyes (positioned way further up from the mouth), big buckteeth (like a beaver)

*Three-Legged Screaming Thing: Green/yellow Frackle w/ beak, spiky hair, and three long legs.

TITLE CARD/EPISODE I.D
Has Jim with Kermit, a Snerf, Whatnot #1 and the purple monster.

Shaggy: Today, Scooby and the gang meet Jim Henson and his Muppets

Scooby and the gang are driving on the road...They notice a cry of help coming from the empty theater nearby. They stop to see what is all the commotion...

The old lady (the owner) is at the main entrance. She reports that a really scary monster is out on the loose and could be anywhere just about now...

Out from the dark shadow a monstrous beast (Splurge. He’s blue in this scene) emerges from the dark shadow, making a rather scary growl. Scooby gets frightened and runs into the bushes. Shaggy is scared too and he runs with Scooby.

Jim comes out the door

Jim: (laughs) It’s alright, kids. Splurge is just saying hello to you. He means you no harm.

Fred: It’s okay Scoob. This guy’s not gonna hurt you

Lady: Yes, we just thought maybe we play a little joke on you. There’s really no danger here.

A timid-looking Kermit slowly rises up from behind the old woman

Kermit: He wasn’t the only one who was chicken. And boy was I relieved (shuddering)

Daphne: Say, aren’t you Kermit the Frog?

Kermit: Am I? I’m not sure. Let me see (pulls out a mirror and looks into it) Why, yes I am.

Lady: This is Jim Henson, the man behind the Muppets. The green gentleman err...frog, behind me is Kermit.

Kermit: Pleasure to make your acquaintance.

Everyone walks into the main hall. There, they see two giant birds (Gawky Birds) bumping into them.

Jim then calls the two puppeteers out, who reveal to be Frank Oz and Jerry Nelson. They come down.

As everyone walks into the theater, the ghost from earlier lurks from behind a pillar. Shaggy is relieved because as the lady said earlier, “there’s really no danger”. That’s what he thinks when as everyone goes into the theater; a phantom lurks from behind the pillar.

In the main theater, Kermit, Jim and Velma talk until a hyperactive green creature comes out of nowhere and interrupts them. He is the Three-Legged Screaming Thing. Shaggy asks the lady if there’s a kitchen in the building, and she points out that there is one downstairs. As he goes, Scooby follows.

Jim notices Kermit in a cardboard box. Kermit pretends to be different types of characters using the costumes in the box. He pretends to be a cowboy, a hippie, a bandit, and a sci-fi movie monster.

Jim introduces Daphne to Thog, who admits that he really likes her but is too shy to express it. She helps him overcome his shyness in a song (like in the one Julie Andrews special) Flower-Eating Monster and the Snerfs also pop up briefly during the number. FEM eats a flower at the end.

Shaggy and Scooby are in the kitchen downstairs, where they make a giant sandwich. Beautiful Day Monster sneaks up from behind the counter and eats it in one bite. Shaggy closes his eyes before taking a bite, but realizes there’s nothing in his hands. He thinks” “What’s going on here?” BDM pops up to reveal himself, wearing a blonde wig, giving Shaggy a kiss and running off.

Fred notices a purple monster, who seems like she’s stuck in a rut. It’s because she’s “ugly” and that her last date was with a pile of garbage. Fred helps her improve her image by changing her face (this is sort of a take on the “I Feel Pretty” bit from Ed Sullivan)

Meanwhile, Shaggy and Velma are on stage where they hear someone calling them...

Whatnot #1: Hey, maybe you can help us?

Velma: Who said that?

Whatnot #1 enters the room, without any features

#1: I did

Shaggy: Oh no! What happened to the rest of you?

#1: My brothers and I were born this way you know...

The other Whatnots come in

#1: Anyway, maybe you guys can help us be ready for our big number

(The others murmur, agreeing with #1)

Shaggy: Sure, like what can we do?

#1: Maybe you could...for instance, give me a nose

Velma: Okay...(looks in a box full of eyes, finds a regular human nose colored red)

#1: Oh gee thanks. (sneezes) Ah...ah CHOO! (nose falls off)

#4: Gazoontite!

#1: You know what? Maybe get another one. This one won’t stay on...

(Velma looks into the box again. She finds a big round nose and puts it on)

#1: Ah, now that’s better. Oh, wait...(sniffs) Hey what’s that smell? Oh, never mind.

Velma picks out more noses for the other three guys. Now all they need is some eyes. She puts them on #2, but they’re “evil” eyes, making him act intense. She then moves them right on the near top of the mouth, but he can’t see the others that well, but now they’re put in the right place. She does the same for others, and adds some more features. Once they’re done, they all sing, “Consider Yourself”

Backstage, Kermit meets Tom, Dick and Harry, three Snerfs. They try their attempt at telling jokes, but they couldn’t because they’re stage fright.

Whatnots #1 and 2 appear again, doing a vaudeville number, telling jokes.

The gang finds each other again to see what’s going on...

Daphne: Hey, what was that?

Everyone turns around and sees the phantom

Phantom: LEAVE OR BE DOOMED FOR ETERNITY!

Shaggy: You heard what he said! Let’s make like trees and leave!

Scooby and the gang, along with Jim (and Kermit), do what the ghost says and get out!

Typical chase scene here (accompanied by 60s music, like in every episode). I’ll leave you guys to picture what goes on in this scene in your heads.

Velma: What was that?

Fred: I don’t know, but it might be some sort of monster...

Shaggy: (angrily) and she said that there was no danger!

Everyone then comes up with a plan to capture the ghost. Jim has an idea; with the not really so willing help of the frog and Scooby

The plan involves Scooby and Kermit in drag (!) The phantom notices and runs to them, only to bump into the wall.

Kermit: (takes off costume) I guess you CAN teach an old frog new tricks

Velma: And now let’s see who our mysterious phantom really is...

And the phantom turns out to be...

Nobody, because it was only a puppet.

Velma: But...but how?

Jim then admits everything...

Jim: Actually, I can explain THAT. Oh, Frank!

Camera cuts to up the floor, where Frank reveals himself as the one who was operating the phantom all along. Of course Jim was only playing along with the others. Again, this was another joke that he and the Muppet team pulled on them again.

Now, it’s time for the gang to leave. Everyone says goodbye. A ghost comes in and scares Scooby, but it’s Splurge who kisses him and blurts out the famous closing line.

One blurb in credits read:

The Muppets are a creation of JIM HENSON

Starring The MUPPET performers (I’ll let you know who performs who as well):

JIM HENSON (Kermit, Whatnot #1)
FRANK OZ (Whatnot #4, Splurge)
JERRY NELSON (Thog, Beautiful Day Monster, #3, Three-Legged Screaming Thing)
JERRY JUHL (Purple monster, Whatnot #2)

I didn't like this as much as your Sesame Street one.
I thought the plot seemed a bit too brief. It went too quickly. But I commend you for your imagination and hope you write some more sometime

Well, I kinda felt that way too as I was writing this. I was thinking of writing more, but now I'm totally stuck. But I've always thought it would be cool if the Muppets appeared on that show (and maybe make frequent appearances on other shows). They would be...

That was good. It's too bad that wasn't actually made (though somehow I doubt that the non-Sesame Street Muppets would have been popular enough at the time to appear as guests on Scooby Doo). It's a shame that you didn't include Rowlf or Baskerville in this, since they, like Scooby, are dogs.

I already included Rowlf and Baskerville in this list.
Oh, I didn't notice that list.

In your mind, is this meant to be completely animated, or a combination of animation and live action, or all live-action, with the Scooby Doo cast being puppets?

Now that sounded like something Jim Henson Would have done During Sam & Friends.

If this really was made, then I wonder if Disney would have allowed for the Muppets episode to be released on The New Scooby-Doo Movies DVD set, considering that Scooby-Doo is owned by Warner Bros., a bigger rival than Hit!

Here's a completely revised list of Muppet episodes:

MUPPET MADNESS (1972)
Scooby and the gang first meet the Muppets.
Highlights include...
-Mah Nah Mah Nah
-Talking Robot
-Rowlf, backed up by the Sesame Muppets, sings "Swinging on a Star"

Characters: Kermit, Ernie and Bert, Big Bird, Rowlf, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, Thog, Mah Nah Mah Nah, Splurge, Muppet Robot

THOSE MEDDLING MUPPETS (1972)
Kermit gets cursed with a green thumb
Characters: Kermit, Tamenilla Grinderfall, The Country Trio

MUPPET HUJINKS (1973)
-The Beetles sing "Come Together" with a large Hippie (seeing this would give you nightmares---see below)
-A precursor to Fozzie Bear (his voice would be similar to Gleep from the Santa Claus skit from Ed Sullivan); much darker brown fur, no eyebrows, different nose, big bowtie but same hat

The Beetles: 4 Muppet beetles performed by Jerry Nelson (as Lennon), Richard Hunt (as Paul and Ringo), and Carroll Spinney (as George---with a bit of Oscar mixed in the voice; for his singing voice, he sounds like Big Bird)

Large Hippie: Kind of like Dr. Teeth, but much more hairy and with googly eyes (red pupils that glow) and huge; has blue skin, gangly arms.
