Yeah, I'm disappointed it didn't even get the dumped in winter vacation months their other 3 TV cartoon based movies (Teacher's Pet, Recess:School's Out, and Doug's First Movie... which was going to be a DTV project until Disney found out how much money the Rugrats film made).
I don't know how they'd top that as a film, especially with the concept they have... and that's what the creators want. Right down to completely wrong for the role Jim Carrey as Dr. Doof. He's far too hyper for such a subdued role like Doof's.
If they did have a film, I can't wait to see how critics that don't even bother watching the show (or watched two episodes) will say about it. I kinda laugh at the terrible response the Powerpuff Girls movie had. It ranged from "Oh? That stuff is
still out there?" to "Why is this dark? The series is always light" (except for a real good handful of dark episodes, like Knock it Off and the one with Bunny) to my personal favorite, Ebert and Roper's complete I don't get it, so it's terrible because it has to answer to a standard of things we
do understand.... and the film was the masterpiece of the freaking series.
That's why most cartoons don't become theatrical ones. The inability for film critics to say "This is a movie version of a TV show and should be judged by the context of the TV show." Only ONE guy did that and gave a fair review of Spongebob's film, saying it doesn't quite have the same charm as it's 11 minute cartoon counterpart. And that's completely understandable and agreeable.
