Chapter 1
She sat as patiently as one could when you waited for bittersweet feelings to begin. His rehearsal was today so she expected him to be running late. Still, forty minutes was a long time to wait.
Quietly she clucked to herself as she examined the deep blue of the pond that reflected the clouds gently drifting by through the sky and reminded her of his fur. The grass bent to the side of the March winds yet the leaves of the trees maintained their struggle to stay on their assigned branches.
“Camilla,” Gonzo’s voice drifted solemnly to her as he walked up the path, “thank you for waiting for me. I didn’t know we would be running that long.”
“B-bawwk,” was the only response when he eased beside her on the bench and let his hands go limp in his lap. Slowly he gathered the courage to look into her eyes and search for what she may have been feeling.
It’s funny, Camilla thought to herself as she examined his eyes for a gleam of the Gonzo she had fallen in love with,
how one can be so enraged by a whatever and still love them at the same time.
Camilla let her shoulders lift and fall heavily in a shrug to ask Gonzo why he had bothered to bring her here.
“Let’s walk,” was his only response and she let her mind wander back to their first Christmas alone together.
December 23 Seven years earlier
“Why do you build me up, buttercup baby, just to let me down?” Gonzo’s voice crooned to Camilla and the rest of the audience. Camilla danced as gracefully as a chicken could away from and towards Gonzo as the lyrics described the gentle play that occurred in a beginning relationship. Scooter, Rowlf, and Kermit rocked back and forth in the background snapping in time to the music and provided back up.
“and mess me around
and then worst of all you never call baby
when you say you will
But I love you still
I need you more than anyone darling
You know that I have from the start
So build me up, buttercup,
Don’t break my heart
I’ll be over at ten you told me
time and again
But you’re late I wait around and then
I run to the door I can’t take anymore
It’s not you, you let me down again
(Hey Hey Hey) Baby, baby try to find
(Hey Hey Hey) A little time and I’ll make you mine
(Hey Hey Hey) I’ll be home
I’ll be beside the phone waiting for you
Why do you build me up buttercup baby
just to let me down and mess me around
and then worst of all you never call baby
when you say you will But I love you still
I need you more than anyone darling
You know that I have from the start
So build me up, buttercup,
Don’t break my heart
You are my toy but I could be the boy you adore
if you just let me know
Until you do I’m attracted to you all the more
why do I need you so
Baby, baby try to find
A little time and I’ll make you mine
I’ll be home I’ll be beside the phone
waiting for you
Why do you build me up buttercup baby
just to let me down and mess me around
and then worst of all you never call baby
when you say you will But I love you still
I need you more than anyone darling
You know that I have from the start
So build me up, buttercup,
Don't break my heart.[FONT="]”

Kermit headed backstage and announcing to the group to hurry up and get ready for the Holiday send off party. This year they had decided to each go there separate ways for the holidays (well, go in their separate groups really). Gonzo stood at the desk casting desperate looks around to make sure Camilla wasn’t within hearing range.
“Thanks so much for setting this up for us Kermit,” Gonzo whispered.
“You’re welcome Gonzo. I’m just sorry that you’re having to travel in the same fashion as the Great Muppet Caper.”
“Are you kidding?” Gonzo’s eyebrow’s raised in wonder, “That’s going to be the second best part about this trip!”
“I just hope that Camilla feels the same way,” Kermit muttered to himself as he watched Gonzo dash off to find her amid the Muppets gathering out front for the holiday party.
Gonzo found Camilla standing in the corner gossiping with Janice, Miss Piggy, Wanda, and Sara. Gently he looped his arms around Camilla’s waist and leaned down to the whisper so that only she could hear “I hope your ready my little chic-a-de because in an hour we make our daring escape into that mysterious world of our own.”
Nervous, excited worms wriggled and tickled Camilla’s stomach and all she could do was nod yes in excitement to their first romantic outing alone. The group watched Gonzo make his way over to Fozzie before speaking.
“Oh, wow, Camilla. Like I sure wish Floyd could take me for a romantic surprise outing but we have gigs all break.”
“You’d better get a good one too. That weirdo has been keeping my Kermie all to himself for weeks to plan this for you.”
“Bawk, bawwk.”
“You said it,” Wanda added, “Jut make sure to relax and have a good time.”
It didn’t take long for that hour to disappear in the chaos of the Muppets party with the laughter, dancing, and merriment radiating from all corners of the room, including Statler, Waldorf and Sam for once. Gonzo carefully steered Camilla out the door amidst the cries of well wishes.
“Bring me back the local delicacy!” Rizzo pleaded.
“I just want a couple of hot girls, hokay.”
“You know how to get in touch with me if you have any problems,” Kermit assured Gonzo.
“And don’t forget to consult with Camilla before you answer why the chicken crossed the road!” Fozzie shouted, sharing the only piece of wisdom he could think to add.
The remainder of the wishes were lost as they burst into the night air and got into Beau’s cab for the ride to the airport.
“You’re beautiful babe,” Gonzo said as he looked adoringly into her eyes.
“Awww,” she blushed and shuddered as he leaned down to gently kiss her.
Since it was too dark to see their destinations once they were on the plane, they spent the evening cuddling and kissing until their crate was booted from the cargo hold.
“Yippee!” Gonzo cried as he comforted and thanked Camilla for allowing him to be a daredevil.
It was so late that all Camilla registered before falling asleep with her head cushioned just right against a foam pillow was that they were in a log cabin in a wooded area. She awoke in the late morning to find Gonzo watching her patiently and a beautiful view of the snow covered mountains and the town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee nestled below them.
The day was spent touring the town for their whimsical wants and desires. Gonzo spent an hour signing waivers with emergency contact information to b e allowed to ride the chair lifts round trip dangling from the edge of the chair by his nose. Camilla couldn’t help but smile at his delight. An evening meal was enjoyed at the lodge, with caroling and yuletide wishes exchanged with the other vacationers.
Back in the cabin they cuddled under a blanket on the loveseat in front of the fire and enjoyed the Christmas lights blinking at them from the tree that the resort had set up for them. Quietly the sipped on their hot chocolate until the clocks chimed in the midnight hour.
“Merry Christmas Camilla.”
“Awww.”
“Thank goodness that there will not be the three spirits to visit us tonight. After all, I have something much more important to do than play with them.”
“Ohh,” Camilla said intrigued by Gonzo’s statement because he had often longed to experience the Christmas spirits since playing Charles Dickens.
“Oh, yes, Camilla. I have much more important things to do tonight. In fact, right now, this moment, is the only reason we have come.”
Gonzo slid from the couch to the floor and turned to Camilla on one knee. A large necklace box had magically appeared in his hands. He opened it, revealing a delicate gold chain with a cluster of stones in the middle. One large diamond lay nestled between two rubies complimentary of Camilla’s eyes.
“I love you, Camilla. I love you with everything I am, whatever I am. You are the only match for me. You make me Gonzo the Great. Will you marry me?”
“Aww, Gonzo!” Camilla managed to choke out from her tears of joy as she nodded yes.
Gonzo lifted the necklace and placed it gently around her neck. The embrace, lost in the thoughts of each other and their dreams of the future.
