Chapter Eight
Moppet moaned and tried to move. It felt like he just slept on a board. Opening his eyes, they instinctively focused upon his captor. She stood there eyeing him suspiciously. If the ropes around him weren’t so tight, he would have caught his breath.
Nicky held herself more like a princess than a pirate. That was what she was a pirate princess. Her blue eyes sparkled like the blue ocean and drowned him unwillingly. Moppet watched in fascination as she pulled off the bandana to adjust it. Never before had he seen her without it. The sea breeze tugged at her chin-length hair. It seemed as if the sea and he were thinking the same thing. For a lock of those soft waves broke forth and ran across her face doing the job he wanted to do with his hand. For a fraction of a moment, Moppet wondered what it would be like to hold this angel in his arms.
“My word, I must be going crazy,” Moppet muttered wishing he were free to kick himself for his head running away from him.
By this time, Nicky had tamed her mass of hair and replaced the bandana. She was fully aware that her prisoner was watching her. She wondered if he knew that he couldn’t whisper worth a flip seeing as she heard what he said. Looking about her she saw that her crew had perched themselves about the ship. They were expecting a show that’s for sure. Usually there was one whenever they brought someone aboard. With a smile, she crossed over to the newest arrival, “Crazy ya are Moppet. That’s what ya get fer goin’ soft. It made it all too easy for us to relieve you of your duties. I‘ll give ya this. Findin‘ out you were headin‘ that fleet surprised me.”
A hearty laugh sounded from about the ship. Moppet felt like he was on display. He wiggled in a feeble attempt to free himself. Then with a sigh he looked at his captor, “All right ya got me. Now what are ya goin’ to do with me?”
Nicky stood and crossed over to her prisoner and eyed him carefully. To be truthful she had no idea at the present moment. Exhaustion swept through her body faster than a tidal wave. It had been a long night. Although they didn’t show it those that had participated in the run were equally as tired. As captain, she felt it was her duty to appear full of energy and ready at an instant. Finally, turning around to pace some more she made her decision, “It’s been a long night. After a haul in like you so graciously gave us I’ve got too much work to do for play at the present moment.” She turned and walked to her first mate. Turning around to face the prisoner she continued, “Mac, bind him in irons and place him beside the other one. I’ll deal with him later.”
For a moment, Moppet’s eyes met hers. In that, instant time ceased. He looked straight into her very soul. The poor girl was about to drop at her feet. He knew how it was. That and there was something else there…what was it? Nicky looked across and saw his eyes grow soft in something…what was it? Then inside of her, something balked breaking the moment as soon as it had begun. Unable to tear away her voice knew to continue on, “After Vic’s nap I want to see you in my cabin. Also, I want no disturbances until then understand?”
Mac nodded and motioned for two of the nearest sailors to remove the ropes. Moppet fell to his knees gasping for his breath. Suddenly someone pulled him to his feet and marched him forward. The descended below deck and turned into what seemed to be a dark room. In a far corner, two cells stood built out of iron bars. The only light in the room came from a lantern that hung above and the porthole on the wall. Mac opened the door to the cell against the corner and his guards shoved him in. On either side of him, they flanked holding his hands and feet together. As soon the irons lay on his wrists and ankles, the three men left without a word taking the lantern with them.
A pain filled voice echoed in the dark stillness, “Got you too didn’t they? You always said this day would come.”
Moppet scooted himself around to view the cell next to him. Even in the dim light he could see Hevej laying on a cot with a bandaged foot, “Hevej is that you man? By thunder what happened to you?”
Hevej rolled over and stood up. He limped over to the bars that separated the two cells. He studied Moppet carefully looking to see what the devil had done to him, “By jove you look whole. Didna she do anythin’ to ya? Ambushed the Christy is what she did to me. Then tied me up so hard I couldna hardly breathe. Get this man, she expected me to fight her! If’n I had me breath I coulda whupped her. Instead, she gave me a lesson for runnin’ thet husband o’ hers through. Some lesson robbin’ me o’ a few toes. Who ever heard o’ a limpin’ pirate?”
“Seems to me she shoulda rid ya of your speech.” Moppet shifted and teased, “I know how those ropes can be. Tight as heck they are. All in all, she’s done nothing but take my fleet and its holdings. As for me…I must be an after meal amusement.”
“Dinner and a show eh? There’s no tellin’ what that demon gots up her sleeve. You’ve battled her once and she disappeared without nary a trace. Do ya think she’s set out to finish what was undone?” Hevej said and limped back to his cot, “Never thought losin’ a few toes could hurt so much. I be needin’ some rum.”
“You’ll be gettin’ your rum when I says you deserve some. Ever since I brought you aboard you’ve been nothin’ but trouble. We’ll catch up with yer ship by nightfall tomorrow. Then I’ll be glad to be rid of ya.” Nicky said as she stepped from the shadows.
“See man! I tell ya she’s no human. She be a demon! She just appears here and there.” Hevej screamed as Nicky threw her head back with a maniacal laugh and disappeared.
Moppet however stared at the empty room shaking his head. He could hear nor see anything. Hevej and himself were the only two in the room. “Hevej, you’re delirious. No one is there. Snap out of it!”
Meanwhile, just above the two prisoners Nicky and Mac had gathered for their conference. Her eyes were dancing merrily. Being the fatherly figure he was inclined too, Mac was trying to look at the girl scornfully. Both finally gave in and laughed heartily. Vic looked back and forth at the two crazies then returned to his play in a far corner.
“He really is fun to mess with. Did ya hear that scream? Superstitious pirate he has no idea who he is dealing with,” Nicky said with another laugh that made her eyes dance more.
“Now girlie, you really outta go easy on the poor boy. Usin’ yer hocus pocus to mess with his head isna gonna rid us of him any quicker,” Mac shook his finger at the laughing girl.
“Bah, off with ya and let me have my fun. By nightfall tomorrow Hevej is gonna wish he never boarded the Christy that day and he’ll never forget me that’s for sure. Now what do I do with the other one?” Nicky said and crossed over to the window .
“Well we are short handed a man. We could keep him on. That’ll save you from taking up the brunt of being short. Yer tired these days girlie.”
“The idea is promising. Mac, you’re a genius. I won’t keep Moppet around because I’m tired. Which I am not!,” Nicky began with a glare and made her way to the door.
“Now where in blazes are ya goin’?”
“Down below. Come with me and I’ll show you why I like the idea so much.”
The two left the cabin and made their way below. Not to be left behind Vic scampered off after them. After catching up to his mother he tugged and motioned to be picked up. Hoisting him onto her shoulders she descended below deck and made her way to the confinement area. Upon entering Mac lit a lantern and hung it on the hook that sat upon the ceiling. Nicky lowered the toddler down who in turn scampered off to where he knew the apples were kept.
Hevej and Moppet both remained quiet. That unnatural smile spread upon Nicky’s face and a glint appeared in her eyes. Mac knew this look, she received it each time she got a hair-brained idea. The others just looked at each other wondering what was going to happen next.
“Now who taught you two to be prisoners? Don’t ya know you need to keep quiet? How on earth am I supposed to think with your hollerin’ and carryin’ on?” Nicky said with her eyes crinkling with laughter.
“Quiet? Quiet!!! How’s am I supposed to keep quiet without me rum? You devil, you demon, where’s the bloody rum you promised me?” Hevej said through his delirium.
“Hevej, I promised no such thing. I said you’d get some when you deserved it. Now here’s a lesson for ya. My ship is a dry ship. The only alcohol here is used for medicinal purposes. Men think clearer and work faster without the wretched stuff. Now you still have 24 hours aboard my ship. When I say you keep quiet, you stay quiet! If I ask ya to give me your sword, you give me your sword! Mac, give the man hardtack for his supper. Place only a few drops of laudanum in his water. Just enough to keep him quiet.” Nicky sneered and Mac nodded in consent. From the far corner a squeal was heard as young Vic finally pried open the lid to the apple barrel.
Moppet sat up as straight as he could. This had gone far enough. He’d heard tales of Nicky having unnatural abilities. Now he was almost sure of it. There was no way he was going to sit by and let her torture his friend, “Leave him alone. Haven’t you done enough to him. Besides I’m the fresh meat. Seems like you would be ready for a more challenging target.”
Nicky crossed over in front of his cell and began to size him up, “And you’re to be a challenge? You hear that Mac? This sailor thinks he can take me on. Seems I remember another time when I got the best of you.”
“He still bears the scar Cap’n. I believe what your audience is wonderin’ is what you plan to do,” Mac said standing perfectly still like a tower.
Nicky looked over to make sure if Vic was playing happily. After seeing the small boy stand up inside the barrel chomping on an apple she continued, “It seems to me Mac that our guest here doesn’t know who I am. What is it they call me again?”
Moppet had had enough of her arrogance glaring ahead he interrupted, “A devil, demon and heartless. You can’t intimidate me nor gain my respect, Nicky. No matter how hard you try.”
“I can’t? Want to place a wager on that? You stay aboard and work as one of my men. If I haven’t either scared you out of your wits or gained your respect in a month then I let you go…with your gold. I’ll never bother you nor any of your ships again,” Nicky stood up against the door with her arms crossed in front of her chest waiting.
Moppet needn’t to think twice. If his hands were free he would have shook her hand, “It’s a deal.”
“Have you gone mad man?” Hevej interjected from his corner.
Nicky turned and retrieved her happily munching son from the apple barrel. She tickled him and set the toddler off in a fit of giggles. Then she turned to Mac, “Mac, let him lose. As for you Moppet, report to my cabin within the hour. You’ll bunk with Matty. You’ll find him in the nest seeing he’s on watch today. Matty will give you a proper set of clothes and dispose of what you’re wearing. A wise person won’t show up looking like that. That’s all for now.” With that she was gone carrying a chattering baby.
Moppet rubbed his wrists where the irons were and muttered, “As for you Nicky, I’ll find out what makes you tick. If it’s the last thing I do.”
