I disagree. I know a lot of people were either iffy or unimpressed with the historical bits but that was what I enjoyed the most. I keep hearing the critique that it was 'too English' but I don't know about that. I'll grant you it was a little disjointed but the rings and the lighting of the cauldron won it over for me.
That thing about the giant inflatable Captain Hook, Voldemort, Cruella DeVille, and Queen of Hearts being defeated by a legion of Mary Poppinses was certainly... errrr... special. Still, I wonder why there was no Sherlock Holmes mention anywhere if they were talking about Brit Lit... Sherlock and Marvin the Paranoid Android. And their version of Dennis the Menace.
To be fair, I really also loved the James Bond bit where the Queen jumped out a plane. It's all more entertaining and less disturbing than what China did last time. That just screamed "do it right, or you'll never see your family and loved ones again!"
NBC's coverage is the joke everyone says it is, though. I will say that I'm so deeply programmed, when the country name "Madagascar" popped on screen, I jumped out of my seat (having just watched a crapload of Penguins of Madagascar episodes)... but when the commentators mentioned it, I face palmed. You can't describe a country by their culture, so you describe it with
our culture. Mmmkay!
