Hi all!

I haven't been around for a while, so you probably won't remember me all that well, (so "hello everyone!")

I have a stiching-related question I'd like to pose!

I've justy recently acquired a very nice real leather Darth Vader suit which is fantastic, virtually flawless inside and out.. apart one very small glitch in the stiching. It looks to my untrained eye as if a broken stich has been mended, or were one thread has run out?????

Does anyone recognise what the maker has done here? I know the photos could be better  It doesn't really bother me too much and this stiching's only decorative but if it's posible this can be made to look tidier I love to hear from you!

The photos:

Thanks very much - I'm sure amongst all this talent someone can help!

That looks to me like the thread ran out mid-sew and it had to be started and stopped again. You can tell because you have to backstitch a couple of times when you start and end a thread, otherwise it will unravel.

If it doesn't hold anything together, you could probably take the entire stitch out and have someone with an industrial sewing machine (because it's leather) re-sew the entire line.

This may be more trouble than it's worth, though. Don't attempt this if you don't have access to a heavy-duty sewing machine, however, since a regular sewing machine will either give unsatisfactory results or break during the sewing. Maybe you could take it to someplace that does leather sewing to have it re-done. I'd think it'd be better to have a pro work on it and do it right than do it yourself and ruin the whole thing.

Thanks very much guys!

Yeah, melonpool I won't be attempting this myself! It's almost tempting to have a go though as the leather is lovely and soft...

I'm wondering whether purely for neatness just this cluttered bit of stiching can be snipped and pullled out (it's barely half an inch long), then a new length of black cotton threaded through the same holes to complete the line. All the loose ends of the original and new cotton thread would be anchored to the inner lining with a droplet of superglue to stop them unravelling? Would this work?

IF I decide to do anything about this I'll certainly take the whole garment to a professional to look at!

thanks again for your help - I'll be checking that sewing site too!
