This week has been terrible. Thank goodness it's almost over.

The day will forever be burned into my mind, and the collective consciouness of America and the world.

Unfortunatly I had just signed on the air an hour before it happened, and had the unfortunate honor to be the first radio person to report the news in Memphis (one of the few scoops I wish I didn't have).

We stopped regular programming for quite awhile, which is very unusal for us, and covered the news both locally and nationally. I wish more TV and radio stations would take a similar route, but unfortunatly in today's world, more people are interested in hearing their song because they've "had a bad day", or seeing the game on TV to unwind from their week. Makes me ill at times. I was very pleased and proud of the few stations who aired coverage of the tragedy up until 5 or 6 o'clock local time.

My heart and prayers goes out to the families of the Astronauts, and to the citizens of Israel who lost a hero.

God Bless America.

Not only is this a sad tragedy for our country, this is especially hard on the residents of Texas. Rick Husband, Mission Commander for the Columbia is from Amarillo, Texas. He leaves behind a wife and two children. Mr. Husband was active in our community and churches. Also, Pilot William McCool grew up in Lubbock, Texas. He leaves behind a wife and three sons. Our prayers are with all the shuttle's crew's families.

Being in Amarillo, we weren't affected by falling debris as the shuttle would have already passed east of us. Although, family members in Dallas say that they heard the boom and their house shook.

Words alone cannot express the sadness that we feel.
Yeah that is what really was so sad...on the news they showed very recent footage of all 7 of em, and they seemed so happy up there, and it talked about how most of them had kids. Man...

Im so glad kids today didnt watch this live on tv, like I did in 3rd grade for the first shuttle explosion. Traumatic stuff.

Totally...and I thought I was just getting over my depression...not a good week at all...

Finally, not to underscore this, but just look at today's headlines for Africa:

http://msnbc.com/news/africa_front.asp

I feel really bad how much suffering goes on there every day, even though its not exactly front page news when big tragedies occur there.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those poor people.

It is times like these you realise how minor your own problems are compered to those of other people.

Hiya,

I was riding out to N Memphis listening to 94.1 the Buzz (RadioNate's station) and heard the news.

Bummer.

And this information from a friend, too. :frown:

I started listening to the simulcast of the news on the radio and all I could do was smack my knee and say, "NO NO NO NO NO!"

Unbelievable.

I didn't see this one live like I did when Challenger exploded. We were all in the library cheering when it happened, and there was complete, dead silence all of a sudden.

Perfectly terrible way to spend a weekend, especially while having tummy troubles. yuck.

Sorry to hear about your tummy troubles, Foz.:frown:

Really, this week has been one terrible thing after another. When I heard about the explosion, I was called by my father on the cell phone and told to tell everyone about it. I was like, "What? How do you just bring something like that up?" Needless to say, we had the radio in the car on all morning to hear any updates. Me and my friend just sat there shaking our heads.

I did not need to hear about that arm though.

here's what i don't understand, the media kept on covering this story all day saturday and they were not getting any new information. i can see the point of having the news on for maybe four hours after something bad like this shuttle explosion happen but do they really need to drag the story on? if something else new happens they should interrup regular broadcasting and report it, but i don't think they should be on for 7 hours going back and forth on a major news event...
