There seem to be a few fans of the Hitchhiker Trilogy on this forum. Does anyone know if Adams ever set to music this song protesting teleportation from the second book?
>Aldebaran's great, OK,
>Algol's pretty neat,
>Betelgeuse's pretty girls,
>Will knock you off your feet.
>They'll do anything you like,
>Real fast and then real slow,
>But if you have to take me apart to get me there,
>Then I don't want to go.
>Singing,
>Take me apart, take me apart,
>What a way to roam,
>And if you have to take me apart to get me there,
>I'd rather stay at home.
>Sirius is paved with gold
>So I've heard it said
>By nuts who then go on to say
>"See Tau before you're dead."
>I'll gladly take the high road
>Or even take the low,
>But if you have to take me apart to get me there,
>Then I, for one, won't go.
>Singing,
>Take me apart, take me apart, You must be off your head,
>And if you try to take me apart to get me there,
>I'll stay right here in bed.
The reason I ask is that I'm trying to set it to music myself just for fun. It
sounds almost like a Beach Boys' song, and that's what I've been trying to do with it (succesessfully so far, I think).
If I can figure out a way to do so, I will try to post it when I finish it.
Thoughts?

My guess is he just adapted the music of the old folk song IT AIN'T GONNA RAIN NO MORE, based on the rhythm of the lyrics. Same could be said of Adams' other lyric in the same section:

"I teleported home one night
With Ron and Sid and Meg
Ron stole Meggie's heart away
And I got Sidney's leg"

I thought it might have been used in some other form of the Trilogy, since (at least this is what I've been told) they tried to make it into a TV show, a radio play, (and of course now a movie, which I heard did no suprising disservice to the books), a towel, and, well, who knows what else. That's why I thought it had been set already. Not that it matters too much, since I'm not about to like, publish this or anything. That'd be too much red tape for moi, a poor college student.
Anyway, the thing with "It Ain't Gonna Rain No More" (is that an English folk song originally? oops! digression...) makes quite a bit of sense. I like the way you think, Andy.
I'm a bit stumped as to how I would post the completed product on here to share with folks. It's come out rather nice so far; the hard part is getting the type of vocal harmonies the Beach Boys would have used.
