I just heard on the news that the Catholic Church has added pollution, drugs, and genetic experiments in addition to the original Seven Deadly Sins.

Okay, what's the deal?

I mean, pollution? So what, people can't drive their cars, or take the bus anymore because they'll be "sinning"? If taking drugs is a sin, then how come smoking cigarettes, cigars, marijuana, cocaine, meth, etc, and drinking alcohol aren't? Genetic experiments, I can see to a degree, but...
My own feelings about church aside, they didn't mean anything so benign as driving your car is now a sin. They're just saying that it's everyone's responsibility to take care of the planet. Just don't use your car irresponsibly, that's all. Also, it's important to note that this was just a Vatican official speaking off-the-cuff.. it wasn't an official statement or anything like that.. and he didn't say pollution was a new sin, what he said was "environmental irresponsibility." Sort of reminds me of The Jim Henson Hour, and the environment-centric Sesame Street of the mid-late 80s. And, of course, regardless of its consequences upon whatever you believe the afterlife to be, people should be environmentally responsible, so our children and grandchildren can have a world where they can breathe, and maybe even see snow every few years. :zany:

3. Hybrid cars cost more than regular cars, and people can barely afford regular cars already what with decreasing wages, and increasing prices.
this is innaccurate.. the prices of hybrid cars are lowing, not increasing.. we're in a recession. the only things not getting cheaper are gasoline and food, the things we actually need. In any event, the prices of hybrid cars, while higher than non-hybrid counterparts, are getting closer, to the point where now, the average driver can recoup the extra cost in about 5 years.. most people are going to keep the car more than 5 years and therefore, would be get more benefit long-term from a hybrid than a non-hybrid.. and with gas prices rising and hybrids getting cheaper, that length of time to recoup the extra cost will only lessen in the future.. but, of course, those of us who only buy used cars have to take what we can get until we get decent jobs

Honestly, the next time I need to buy a car, I'm going to do my best to get a Hybrid. I'm sick of so many little things we do in everyday life contributing to our planet's destruction.

I really don't care what label an organization choses to put on it or not, pollution is an evil thing. I don't have to call it deadly or otherwise to think that.
I do not see how it is possible to live without producing some kind of pollutant that could potentially be harmful in this day of age. Polluting being a sin, IMO, is just silly and unnecessary.

And why does polluting matter if "jesus is supposed to come" anyway?

Well yes, it is difficult to completely avoid pollution. The point is that we make the effort not to pollute; we do the best we personally can. That shows what kind of character we have.

"We do good because it is good, not because it will go somewhere."

I still don't believe polluting should be a sin. But more of a "What Would Jesus Do" kind of thing. It'd be in everyones best interest if you tried not to pollute, so you do your best not to. But making it a sin just makes people angry and feel guilty.
