I was editing my signature and got that annoying little message that said the signature was too long... BUT it was different this time: it was the signature could be no longer than "250 characters including BB Code markup". With that, I was excited to see the character limit was raised a bit, SO I decided to switch back to an old signature I had a couple of years ago, but then when I tried to save it, the message went back to the limit being 125, but this time excluding BB Code markup.

What's up with that?

Nothing has changed. The limit is 125 regular characters excluding BB code or 250 characters including BB code (with a maximum of 125 regular characters). The same rule of four lines only that we've had for years also applies.
