WHY is it legal to BUY assault weapons in this country? WHY?

D---the theatre for being so lax in BASIC security, and d-- this country for providing the tools for carnage. Our founders never meant for insane people to have easy access to weaponry.

The answer to the first question...

NRA. All I'm saying. it's perfectly legal to buy war toys because that's kinda sorta maybe almost what the Forefathers probably intended I guess when they passive aggressively wrote the second amendment. Except that they didn't see the future with fire arms that don't take 5 minutes to load a single bullet, and like I said, still ticked off that Britain was able to take away their guns and seize their property from the years leading up to, and including the Revolutionary War.

Why can't we have legislation that protects responsible gun owners and punishes crazies that buy weapons intended for combat and stock pile them up for months, like the shooter did? Why don't we even have a registry?

Second question, though? Why the heck would a theater showing the grand premiere of ANY movie have no security? Other than the fact the guy was able to stockpile weapons for months, no one could have foreseen this... BUT this is the grand premiere of a big budget movie. Why is no one guarding the doors and checking bags for ANTI-PIRACY reasons? Take the shooter out of the equation. Anyone could have snuck in a device to record the movie and throw it on the web the second they got out of the theater. Heck, the fact that the gunman was able to prop open the outside emergency exit without an alarm sounding off... that's the theater's fault right there. Again, gunman out of the equation... someone could have snuck a WHOLE lot of non-paying customers to see the film for free through the back door.

So, basically... the NRA and the crappy theater are to blame.

Still have to say if we dealt with disturbed people before they went this unhinged this wouldn't happen.

You can't garuntee it wouldn't have happened he could've had the best treatment in the world and he still could've snapped. May have been prevented I will say but not garunteed he wouldn't have done it had he been in a treatment program.

Well there are no guarantees. Doesn't excuse our country's flawed health care. And it doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Plus it can be very difficult to get an adult committed before they've actually done anything. Even if his mother saw the signs (which it seems she did) there was very little she could do.

There's not much stopping in a guy becoming insane, wishing harm on others, and wanting to destroy the fabric of society... but wouldn't it be peachy keen if we couldn't let those people buy up a small army's worth of advanced weaponry? You know, so he'd have to use smaller amounts of close range weaponry that can easily be smacked out of his hand or some big cumbersome chemical cocktail he could just as easily drop and blow himself up?

I understand gun rights. I DON'T understand the need for advanced weaponry being legally purchasable. I don't think that would have helped his mental state... but he spent at least 2 months stockpiling the stuff. On the third assault rifle, someone should have said, "Hey! Wait a minute. Something's fishy here." But they didn't. It was normal and legal, and we can't do anything about it because the NRA cares more about whatever cut they get from weapon sales and buying or threatening politicians than they do about anyone else... EVEN responsible gun owners.

And seriously... Midnight showing of a new movie... we have all these half butt attempts to curb piracy on the internet.. how about some SECURITY during the first screening? No one could have thought someone could shoot up a theater, but hasn't it dawned on anyone that we'd have at least 10 cameras and camera phones capable of taking the 2 1/2 hours of footage necessary to record it and toss it up on Pirate Bay until the Russians get a DVD quality copy of the film? Why weren't they searching for cameras at the theater?

I find it kind of funny that in this thread people are complaining that the media will sensational this and people will over react and at the same time blame is being spread anywhere from our healthcare system to the NRA to movie theater security.
