Number 172 is one of my favorites as of late because it has a great combination of adult-kid interactions and Muppet-driven humor that made old school Sesame Street so special. Read on for some original scenes with David, Buffy, Maria, Barkley and Oscar...and some classic inserts featuring Ernie, Bert, Kermit, Cookie Monster, the Count, and more! And keep your eyes open for a reference to the SS staff and crew.

Sesame Street Old School Outline 172

Season 10: Oscar’s flea circus/Buffy and Barkley play together

Sponsors: F, S, 9

Scene 1: David and the kids write a capital “F” and a lowercase “f” on the sidewalk with chalk.

Muppets: Ernie and Bert share peanut butter and bread

Cartoon: Typewriter Guy – S is for Spring

Cast: David, Maria, and Bob show in, on, and under

Muppets: Sesame Street News Flash – Kermit interviews the characters from “Hey Diddle Diddle,” and watches Natalie the cow jump over the moon

Film/Song: “Families” (by Joe Raposo)

Cartoon: Filbert’s Flea Circus

Scene 3: After watching the previous segment, Oscar is inspired to start his own flea circus. David says that would be ridiculous, but Oscar shows him an egg carton that houses his pet fleas Jerry, Al, Caroly, Frank, Victor, Frieda, Ozzie, and Jumbo**. All he has to do is train them to do different circus tricks. Unfortunately, Oscar knocks the carton over, sending the fleas all over Sesame Street. David, Buffy, Maria, Barkley, and the kids all start scratching and force Oscar to retrieve his fleas.
**The fleas’ names are a reference several Sesame Street crew members and puppeteers from season 10: Jerry Nelson, Al Hyslop, Caroly Wilcox, Frank Oz, Victor DiNapoli, Frieda Lipp, and Ozzie Alfonso. Also, Jumbo is a humorously oxymoronic name for a flea…

Muppets: Cookie Monster and the Count cooperate to count and eat cookies

Cartoon: The Old Woman Who Lived in a Nine

Film: African children play together in a village

Cartoon: A mad scientist teaches his monster how to say the F words “Fred,” “foot,” and “Friday”

Scene 4: Oscar has rounded up all the fleas and begins to train them. But he struggles to get his fleas to jump through hoops, walk a tightrope, ride a tiny unicycle, and do a balancing act. Maria, David, and Buffy can barely hide their laughter. Oscar grumbles, “I wonder if this ever happened to Barnum and Bailey.”

Muppets: Japanese Folktale – The Story of the Four Dragons

Cartoon: Six Silly Sailors (animation by Tee Collins)

Film: Kids get a checkup at the dentist’s office (music by Joe Raposo)

Cast: Luis tries to open a door with a “CERRADO” sign. He gets a running start, when Maria changes the sign to “ABIERTO.” Maria opens the door and Luis runs right through it, crashing off-screen.

Celebrity: Richard Pryor narrates a story about the letters of the alphabet

Cartoon: Ali Baba shows “abierto”

Muppets: Waiter Grover serves Simon Soundman, who wants a “cluck-cluck-cluck” sandwich

Suddenly Barkley sees a cat and chases it, causing an off-screen crash. Buffy decides to end the game and calls for Barkley to return.

Film: Lemurs play in the zoo

Cartoon: A monster sees a box that keeps opening and closing, saying “abierto” and “cerrado.”
