Season 3: Getting letters in the mail/A windy day

Scene 1: Molly the Mail Lady brings letters to everyone on Sesame Street. Inside each envelope is a letter of the alphabet. Big Bird gets a B, Gordon gets a G, Maria gets an M, and Cookie Monster gets a C, which he eats.

Oscar offers him a hand, but it’s actually a replica of his hand on a pole that he lets go of, sending David flying away.

Sesame Street Old School Outline

Season 8: Big Bird goes shopping with the adults

Sponsors: E, F, 2

Scene 1: Gordon greets the viewer and says he’s about to have lunch at Hooper’s Store. He orders a bowl of tomato soup, but Mr. Hooper is out of tomato soup. David and Olivia can’t get their egg salad sandwiches because Hooper has run out of eggs. Then Big Bird orders a birdseed milkshake, but Hooper doesn’t have any birdseed. David suggests that Mr. Hooper should go shopping for some food items. Olivia, Gordon, and Big Bird volunteer to go with Mr. Hooper, while David stays behind to run the store.

Muppets: A Muppet barbershop quartet sings about counting floors in an elevator

Cartoon: F is for Frog (art by Jeff Hale)

Film: A girl shows in, on, and under

Cartoon: What if a frog and a fly switched bodies?

Muppets: Bert notices Ernie carrying glasses of water out of the apartment. It turns out that the apartment has flooded and Ernie is trying to get rid of the water.

Scene 2: Outside the supermarket, Big Bird spots Mr. Snuffleupagus entering the supermarket and begs the adults to turn around. Just as they do, a large shipping truck drives by, blocking Snuffy from sight.

Scene 3: In the supermarket, Big Bird marvels at all the aisles and shelves of food. While walking between two aisles, he suddenly sees Snuffy walking past the produce section on the other side of the store. When he finally gets Olivia, Mr. Hooper, and Gordon to turn around, Snuffy is no longer visible between the two aisles.

Cartoon: A bird subtracts balloons by popping them

Muppets: Kermit gives a subtraction lecture using four eggs, which hatch four chicks

Scene 4: Gordon doesn’t remember how many cartons of eggs he must find, so he asks Big Bird to stay put while he goes to ask Mr. Hooper and Olivia. While Gordon leaves, Mr. Snuffleupagus and Big Bird finally encounter one another and quickly say hello. Snuffy leaves to go shopping for cabbages just as Gordon returns. Gordon: “Good, Big Bird! You stayed put and didn’t go looking for your imaginary friend!” Big Bird: “Yes, Mr. Snuffleupagus came to ME! We talked for a few minutes and it was really great! Thank you so much, Gordon! Well, I’m gonna go find Mr. Pooper and help him out now! Bye!” (ending music as a confused Gordon stares at the camera)

Cartoon: A frog glee chorus

Cast: A magician (Luis) subtracts people (including David and Maria)

Cartoon: A man shows pairs of body parts. When he lifts his two legs, he falls down.

Muppets: Bert sings “Doin’ the Pigeon”

Muppets: Cookie Monster goes to the carnival and tries his strength. When he finds out that the prize is a cookie, he destroys the device and wins the cookie.

Muppets: Frank and Jerry measure how far apart they are

Cartoon: Typewriter Guy-E is for Ear

Scene 6: The Count has finished counting the cans and the eggs when Olivia cuts him off. The Count helps Mr. Hooper and Gordon bag the groceries, and everyone heads home. The Count: “That’s four! Four happy customers! Ah, ah, ah!”

Season 8: David imagines going to a disco/Oscar’s clothing store/Salvador Dada visits Sesame Street

Sponsors: G, U, 5

Scene 1: David is listening to a disco recording while cleaning Hooper’s Store and imagines what it would be like to be dancing at a disco. Olivia, Maria, Gordon, Luis, Bob, Susan, and Big Bird are dancing, too. When David awakes, Mr. Hooper is sternly standing next to him and holding the cleaning rag. David sheepishly gets back to work.

Cartoon: 1-2-3-4-5!

Muppets: Kermit sings “Bein’ Green” (1974-75 version)

Cartoon: G-Gorilla (speech balloon)

Muppets: Grover and George sing “Two G Sounds”

Film: This is the desert (Joe Raposo background music)

Scene 2: Bob sees a huge rack of clothing outside Oscar’s can. He finds out that Oscar is selling clothing. Oscar immediately wants Bob to buy something (“Just look at your shirt! Even a Grouch wouldn’t wear that!”), so Bob starts going through the rack to find something to wear. However, all the clothing is torn, stained, or even louder than Bob’s own outfit.

Cartoon: Pinball Count #5

Scene 3: Bob has finished going through the entire rack and is nearly fed up. However, Oscar entices him with a hip shirt and Bob buys it for fifty cents. Afterwards, Bob notices one small thread sticking out. He pulls it and the shirt unravels into thin threads, to his dismay.

Film: A farmer feeds baby calves

Scene 4: Big Bird, Susan, Maria, Luis, and Bob are excitedly waiting for Salvador Dada’s art exhibit to arrive on Sesame Street. Salvador Dada arrives with much fanfare (literally!), and presents his latest masterpieces: four fancy paintings of a circle, a triangle, a square, and a rectangle.

Cartoon: Typewriter Guy-U is for Umbrella

Muppets: The Count hires Ernie to answer his telephone for him. Ernie thinks it’ll be easy, but the Count wants to count the number of times the phone rings and won’t let Ernie answer the phone.

Film: Going to school in New Mexico

Scene 5: Salvador Dada shows his paintings to Oscar, but the Grouch dislikes them. “I think they’re yucky! Now beat it, Surrealist Face!” (Slams his lid down) Salvador Dada: “Humph. Everyone’s a critic!”

Cartoon: U-Ugly!

Film: Baby animals nurse

Celebrity: Edith Ann (Lily Tomlin) counts to five

Scene 1: Oscar shows his new “magic sunglasses” to Bob. The Grouch claims that they help him see things he’s never seen before, like unicorns, leprechauns, and even Mr. Snuffleupagus! Bob is highly skeptical and asks to try them on. As he walks around, Bob crashes into things because the glasses are so dark. When Bob demands an explanation, Oscar cackles, “That’s what I meant! I’ve never seen you run into so many things before! Heh, heh, heh!”

Cartoon: Jazz #10

Muppets: Bert wants to know why Ernie has string tied around his fingers

Insert: Who made this mess? (main cast, featuring the voice of Jerry Nelson)

Cartoon: Christopher Clumsy presents shapes

Scene 2: Big Bird enters Hooper’s Store and is surprised to see Mr. Hooper nearly asleep at the counter (“Boy, Mr. Drooper, it doesn’t look like you got any sleep last night!”). Ernie and Bert enter and order sodas, but a drowsy Mr. Hooper gives them root beers. The two roommates volunteer to run Hooper’s Store for the day while Mr. Hooper goes home to rest.

Cast: Luis and David cooperate on a rainy day

Muppets: News Flash-Sleeping Beauty (when the prince kisses her, he falls asleep)

Scene 3: After getting instructions from Mr. Hooper, Ernie and Bert start running the store. Maria comes in and orders coffee with sugar. However, in his rambling excitement, Ernie gives her coffee with cream. Bert gets the correct order for Maria, but Ernie takes credit for it.

Muppets: Herry tells an alphabet secret to Grover, who immediately spreads it around to other monsters

Cast: Larry and Phyllis cooperate in order to sing a song

Cartoon: T is for Twine, Trash, and Ticket

Scene 4: Gordon and Susan order turkey sandwiches on rye bread, but Ernie brings them egg salad on pumpernickel. Bert scrambles to get them the right orders as Ernie beams at the counter. “We’re doing a great job together, aren’t we, Bert?” An angry Bert steams in the background.

Film/Song: “Look at This” - Tire (Joe Raposo)

Cartoon: T is for Train

Muppet/Kid Moments: Kermit and Joey recite the alphabet

Cartoon: The secret drawing-a camel

Scene 5: David comes in and greets Maria, Susan, and Gordon before ordering two fried eggs, a cup of tea, and toast. While Bert cooks the eggs, Ernie makes the tea and toast, but as he chats with the adults, the toast burns and the kettle boils over. Ernie blames Bert, who finally loses it. “ERNIE! I’m running around doing all the work, and you’re standing here doing NOTHING!” As he rants, the eggs start burning. The frantic adults point out the burning eggs, but Bert panics. Ernie saves the day by using the fire extinguisher. Susan and Maria suggest that the boys should cooperate instead of fight. Bert and Ernie apologize to each other and decide to work together.

Muppets: Kermit teaches Herry Monster and Cookie Monster to share a bicycle. But the monsters don’t take turns riding the bicycle…they eat it instead!

Cartoon: Typewriter Guy-I is for Ink

Film: Joe Raposo sings “Dressed Up”

Muppets: Bert has purple paint on his hand, and Ernie tries to help him cover it up

Scene 2: Big Bird bumps into Susan and Gordon, who are late for work. He tries to remind them of his special day, but they have no time to listen to him. Gordon: “Not now, Big Bird! We have a bus to catch!” So the Bird heads to Hooper’s Store.

Scene 1: Big Bird plays catch with Bob and the kids. Farley wants to join them, but Big Bird is reluctant. Bob tells Big Bird that it is nice to include others, and he sings “Hi Friend.” Ultimately, Big Bird agrees to let Farley join.

Muppets: Ernie has an important note for Bert, and ransacks the apartment to find the note. When he finds the note, it states that it’s Bert turn to clean the apartment.

Scene 1: On a hot summer afternoon, Big Bird greets the viewer and decides to take a nap on the steps of the 123 Sesame Street building. But his snoring bothers Bob, who is reading the newspaper; Gordon and Luis, who are playing checkers; and Herry Monster, who is working on his needlepoint. Big Bird decides to watch everyone instead.

Season 9: Biff helps Oscar cook/The Count counts beads/David doesn’t want anyone’s help

Sponsors: H, Q, 7

Scene 1: Gordon and Bob discover Oscar and Biff cooking some Grouch food. Oscar starts by mixing an undercooked steak, chocolate sauce, three raw eggs, and a pile of sardines in a bowl, and Biff adds the “piece de resistance” by blowing up the food, spraying everyone with the messy food. Biff: “We oughta open up our own restaurant, eh?” Oscar: “Ha! Dream on, Construction Face!”

This happens two more times until an exasperated Hooper asks, “Count, will you PLEASE make up your mind about how many scoops you want to eat?” “But Mr. Hooper, I do not want to EAT these scoops of ice cream…I want to COUNT THEM!” After counting four scoops (followed by thunder and lightning), the Count returns the cone to Mr. Hooper and exits.

Scene 1: David hears an awful crash and discovers that Herry Monster has dropped a piano. David flips out without letting Herry get a word in edgewise. Then Oscar pops out of his can, thanking Herry for dropping his piano. “Now it’ll sound nice and yucky! Just like a piano should!” David sheepishly apologizes to Herry.

Cartoon: Typewriter Guy – H is for Hand

Muppets: Kermit’s hand lecture

Film: Footage of animals (with mother and son voiceover)

Scene 2: Bob and David are irritated by the sound of Oscar’s wrecked piano. It turns out that Oscar is lending his can as a practice space for the great Grouch pianist, Vladimir Horrible-witz.

Scene 3: The Count arrives on Sesame Street, not feeling too well. Maria, Bob and Mr. Hooper notice that the Count is sneezing and coughing a lot (and counting those sneezes and coughs). Mr. Hooper and Maria suggest that the Count should go see a doctor, and the Count finally agrees after counting his one-hundredth sneeze.

Film: A hand tries unsuccessfully to make noises until another hand comes along and they clap together

Scene 4: Maria and the Count arrive at the doctor’s office where Susan works as a nurse. Susan comes in and immediately takes them into a checkup room.

Muppets: Ernie brings a flashlight, an umbrella, and a bowling ball into the bathtub. Bert ridicules him until the power goes out, it rains inside the bathroom, and a man comes in asking for a bowling ball.
