I'm surprised Kermit the Frog didn't cover this nursery rhyme. So I decided to make this up...
SESAME STREET NEWS FLASH: WEE WILLIE WINKIE
Like most of Kermit’s news reports, we start on the Sesame Street News Flash title card and its theme music.
Announcer: And now, for another fast-breaking news story, we take you to Kermit the Forg, er, Frog!
We fade to a clock tower. It has the hands pointing as 7:59. It is nighttime outside, and a crescent moon is out. We truck out from the clock and see Kermit the Frog, in his hat and trenchcoat, checking his watch and holding his microphone.
Kermit (Jim Henson): Oh, it’s almost time? Well, hi-ho, this is Kermit the Frog of Sesame Street News, and I am reporting from this sleepy little town, hoping to get an interview with Wee Willie Winkie. (Westminster chimes begin ringing from the clock tower) If you remember the poem, “Wee Willie Winkie runs through the town, Upstairs downstairs in his nightgown, Rapping at the window, crying through the lock, Are the children all in bed? Now it’s eight o’clock!” And it’s seven fifty-nine, which is exactly one minute before 8 PM. We will know when it’s 8:00 when the big hand on the clock moves to the twelve, and it chimes eight times. Wee Willie Winkie will then…
DONG!!! DONG!!! The clock begins to strike eight.
Kermit: Ah, that’s two chimes. (DONG!!!) Three chimes. (DONG!!!) Four chimes. (DONG!!! DONG!!! DONG!!!) Five, six, seven… (DONG!!!) That’s eight chimes! It’s officially 8:00 PM. Wee Willie Winkie should be here any second!
Kermit waits a bit. Then Wee Willie Winkie enters (portrayed by a Large Lavender Live-Hand Anything Muppet). He runs over to a house, goes up the stairs, and knocks at the window.
Wee Willie Winkie (Frank Oz): Are the children in bed? Now it’s 8:00!
Female voice from inside (Richard Hunt): No! Stop doing this, Willie!
Wee Willie Winkie: Fine. (begins running down the stairs, but Kermit tries to talk to him)
Kermit: Uh, wait a second, Mr. Willie Winkie…
Wee Willie Winkie: Who are you, frog?
Kermit: Why, I am Kermit the Frog of Sesame Street News, and I want to give you an interview.
Wee Willie Winkie: OK. We NEVER get news reporters here, and you are the first!
Kermit: All right then, what got you into this business of reminding kids all over town to be in bed by eight?
Wee Willie Winkie: Well, I was always a good little boy. I always obeyed my mother and father, and they always made 8:00 my bedtime. I never complained about it, either. I guess this obedient behavior has led to me influencing other kids to do this. Pardon me a second… (goes to the window, knocks at it, and peeks through the lock) Are the children all in bed? For now it’s 8:00!
Male voice from inside: (Jerry Nelson) No! Get lost!
Wee Willie Winkie: Gee, tough crowd tonight.
Kermit: You know, Willie, it sounds like the townspeople are fed up with your nightly reminders.
Wee Willie Winkie: Yeah, but usually they say their kids ARE in bed. But they aren’t in THAT house. Let me try that one. (he goes over to that house, bangs on the window, and peeks through the door) Are the children all in bed? Now it’s 8:00!
Male voice from inside (Richard Hunt): No, my kids AREN’T in bed! Stop doing this every night! Plus, it’s now 8:01!
Wee Willie Winkie: Wow. I wonder why the kids aren’t in bed right now.
Kermit: I think I know the cause. Look over there.
We pan over to a fancy entrance with the word “CARNIVAL” over it. Circus music is playing, and we hear kids cheering and laughing.
Wee Willie Winkie: A CARNIVAL? I’d better warn the kids to go to bed right now!
Kermit: No, Winkie. Carnivals always run until late at night. Let the kids have fun.
Farley and Prairie Dawn exit, laughing and holding cotton candy.
Farley (Jerry Nelson): Boy, what a great carnival!
Wee Willie Winkie: Wait! It’s after 8:00! You kids should be in bed!
Prairie Dawn (Fran Brill): We don’t need you to remind us when to go to bed. That is why parents do it all the time.
Suddenly, a Pumpkin-type Anything Muppet policeman comes up to Wee Willie Winkie.
Policeman (Richard Hunt): (Irish accent) OK, Winkie! We’ve heard complaints from people in town saying they are annoyed by your bedtime routine. I am taking you downtown!
Kermit: Wait a second; this wasn’t how the interview wasn’t supposed to go! Oh well, folks, this is Kermit the Frog returning you to your regularly scheduled programming, and is going to help bail out Wee Willie Winkie.
Wee Willie Winkie: Oh, drat! Kids will be staying up until midnight at this rate!
