I've got two guesses, myself:

  1. Oscar was the naked character, so Sonia was just using a word-play trick. (Fur-covered Muppets rarely wear anything else, after all...)
  2. If Maria was indeed the naked character, it probably involved a bathtub scene; that's been the only context where Sesame Street let humans go without. :embarrassed:
