It's because the people who write the shows boil people down to the popular stereotypes. Same reason how every show about high school has everyone having wild sex and drinking all the time. The middle-aged men and women who write the shows think this is what goes on with the group, so they push it forward. The lowest common denominator plays well.

Nah. It goes beyond making stereotypes. Far beyond. With stereotypes, you make a bold generalization of something. With this, they're making broad generalizations to pretend to understand a counter culture. And quite frankly, they were more accurate with nerd culture when they were using stereotypes. Simpsons got Comic Book Guys and Nerds 2 decades ago. CBG first appeared in 1991 (and was more accurate back then), and the nerd trio (accurate to the point of quoting Monty Python to boot) came out in 1993.

Now nerd somehow means "plays violent mainstream game," (halo or GTA), "sees mainstream comic book/adult oriented nostalgia movies" and "probably read a mainstream comic book that one time." Maybe added "watches one mainstream current anime."

And yet, we get backhanded characterizations and every episode of everything goes to comic-con. Like they even know what that is. Heck, the 1990's Casper cartoon did Comic Cons with the harshest and most realistic light there is. There was even an episode of Freakazoid where he was sitting at a CC panel, where he kept getting questions about Batman TAS, until he snaps and says, "I dunno! Ask Paul Dini!" Nerdiest joke I've ever heard. The only current (ish) show that got comic nerds down pat was Batman Brave and the Bold. Not only do they constantly mock those who whine about how much they hate the show, they have the character of Batmite.

Nerds can be nerds for different things, and different sections of those things. Not all of them are obsessed with the exact same thing. And where's the shout out to animation geeks? Tiny Toons was doing that.

Bump with Update. Uh... first off Marvel is no longer in the picture quite obviously. Now it's with Sony. And frankly I'm on the fence about it as a result.

But what makes me more on the fence-y is the movie's look.

Yeah. Instead of going with the (admittedly quite fun) web toon look, the characters have been anthropomorphized into having legs and arms. Textures too, to show off those CGI's. So no more Homestar Runner/Veggie Tales style invisible arms. Apparently we can believe that an island of Birds and Pigs is at all out war with each other over eggs, but being able to bounce around and hold things via telekinesis is right out.

Other than that, I have never played the game, but fell in love with the characters through their short cartoons and their classic Looney Tunes style humor. I know of the comic book but have never read it, and there's a difference between them speaking complete sentences like the comic and movie and grunting and speaking Simlish like in these shorts. I just wonder if they can hold similar humor to the toons. Maybe I should pick up an AB comic and see how it's handled there. I have my eyes on the Transformers Angry Birds hard back Trade, though.

Them apparently evolving with their gaining limbs and speaking coherently is very questionable indeed, but at least there's a nice pseudo-2D look to the whole thing, like a lot of Sony's other recent offerings. Nothing falling into the uncanny valley, that's for sure.

Well, like I said, they speak perfectly in the comics. I never actually read a full one to see how it works out. I've seen silent character comics before, so those are a thing. But I've also seen comics where Tom and Jerry talk (done by Carl Barks, no less) and (seriously on this one) where the Road Runner not only talked, but talked in rhyme. I did flip through the Transformers crossover, though, but they seem to be speaking like they're the characters they turned into. Only comical like.

But yeah. They aren't so much ugly as...weird. And not quite as quirky cute as their game/toon counterparts. But such as it stands, this could be one of the best video game movies ever. But that's because the competition is... well... when they made the darker, edgier Street Fighter movie they actually made it worse than the goofy cartoony one. I don't think I can be clearer on that (though the Resident Evil movies seem to have a following depending on the film).

Meh. It's an origin movie, because of course it is. And it seems they take the "angry" in Angry Birds a little too literally. Seeing these characters in action, I really wish they kept the original Veggitales aspect of the characters. Other than that, you'd almost not pick up on the fact that it was based on the video game if it wasn't for the one exploding character and the Pigs having dynamite. It seems almost like a generic "Birds going to Anger Management" type film. It isn't exactly bad. It looks much stronger than most video game based movies (including Pixels), and there are some gags that wouldn't be too out of place in the (for the moment) superior Angry Birds Toons. That thing at the end with the sign I could easily see as an ABT. Other than that, I'll wave judgement on final trailers. This trailer is a bit too "trailery."

The final product shouldn't be too bad, but the trailer follows the typical animated movie trailer that makes it seem more idiotic and lowbrow than it really is.

Yep. What I meant by trailery. I can't say I've been huge on Sony's animated films. Cloudy did grow on me, and at least I liked it better than Rio. By no means do I really like the film, but it has its moments and once you distance yourself from the book, it's alright. I did really enjoy Hotel Transylvania, and am looking forward to seeing the second one later. The less said about Open Season, the better. Why did it need 2 DTV sequels? Especially that third one that was clearly made to be a Madagascar 3 mockbuster.

I'll say I'm kinda disappointed they didn't use a "for centuries, Bird and Pig have been at war" premise and went for the origin story type deal. While the Pigs enjoy their video game appearances, they look...awkward with bodies. Overall, I'll probably see this one. Maybe. Doesn't look anything awful or distasteful beyond the trailer's trailerness. Plus, it benefits from the exceedingly low bar of video game movies.

That said, if this isn't that good as a film, I'd be very happy the Sony based Mario movie never went through. Then again, I'm sure no one is that stupid to screw up a Mario movie... the second time.

There's a new TV spot for this film, and it actually involves sequences of birds launching themselves at pigs through giant slingshots. Cool. They got the thin as it is already premise of the game in the film. All the speculation that the movie will be a prequel story, where the birds learn to be angry seem to be valid. Film looks a little better with a little context.

Also, it seems that Lego has got the license for the Brick based toys, meaning K'Nex's run is officially over. They look...eh.

I'm still glad Rovio is making those Angry Birds Internet shorts, and that they can be viewed for free on their Toons.tv website.

On a sidenote, I took a look at their Piggy Tales shorts, and I really like them, too, especially the claymation-looking CGI. I think those have been out of production for a while, unfortunately.

I'm not afraid to admit I've never actually played Angry Birds before...okay, that's technically not true. I tried out the Sega Genesis ROM clone of it, and the physics is waaaay off and it's impossible to pass the second level as a result, but still, props to the programmers.

Anyway, I've never technically played Angry Birds, but I got into the characters via those internet shorts. I really love them, and their very Looney Tunes style sensibilities. I don't know why, but I love these European unintelligible character based cartoons (same with Oggy and the Cocroaches and the Minions who are technically European). Still haven't read the comics, and I plan on getting the collected Angry Birds Transformers comic in time. The movie is looking more and more like what an Angry Birds movie should be with every preview, and it looks like something I might just go see. But those shorts are special and I feel they're the best part of the franchise.
