as with puppet building , i am a big fan of using what ever works for the scene, or character, there really are no right or wrong answers every puppeteer has his or her own comfortable way of working , but comfort is not always a option, sometimes u have to do things that may not feel all that great , but will get the desired result for the scene

this is what i use, but you need to do what ever you feel most comfortable to you!!
That's similar to how I do it, only instead of wrapping my index finger around the rod like that, I rest that finger's knucker on the rod, I find it much better to when moving the rods away from each other (when the puppet is reaching his hands out) and back towards each other (when the puppet is bringing his hands together).

I'm the same way. I use whatever works for me. I only works with my puppets. I'm trying my best to get a few of my own. As in my very own characters to use other then just using others puppet characters.
