Well...I guess I was really wrong. He WAS in the Muppet Show. But, then why would they have made him a character that they run into and don't know initially in Muppets Take Manhattan?
Because they did that with the other characters in the first two movies. In TMM Kermit didn't know any of the others until he met up with them at various points in the film. In GMC Gonzo, Kermit and Fozzie knew each other but they didn't know Scooter, the Electric Mayhem, et al until they went to London.

I think Rizzo was first named in the Andy Williams episode, when Kermit asks him if he knows about the disappearance of the dancing cheese. Rizzo was often on the guest star's shoulder in the goodnights.

Rizzo had a large role in the Joan Baez episode (his largest in the series) as the leader of the rats, tricking Beauregard into getting food for them, at the risk of his job. He wasn't named in this episode (I think only the Andy Williams and James Coburn episodes referred to him by name), but it was Steve performing him and it was the original Rizzo puppet. He also spoke in the closing number of the Jean-Pierre Rampal episode, playing the role of the Burgemousester (Hamelin town leader in Pied Piper reversal).

And he also spoke in the episode where the rats take Sam the Eagle out to dump in the alley---I think it's Christopher Reeve (maybe after "Sam's Song"?), but I'm not sure...

Actually, I think you're referring to the UK spot in the Linda Carter episode. I remember that one very well. I don't think Rizzo said anything, but he did have quite a big part there.

air date of Rocky Mountain Holiday Special?

Hey,
Earlier I posted that Rizzo showed up in the John Denver and the Muppets: Rocky Mountain Holiday Special, and as far as I can tell, he did. Anyway, the question is, did the special air in 1979 or 1983? I thought both John Denver specials aired in 1979; however I found a website that said the John Denver Christmas special was in 1979, while the Rocky Mountain Holiday Special was in 1983. Can someone clear this up for me please? Thank you.

(And by the way, even if RMH was in 1983, that still makes Rizzo's appearance there a year earlier than his The Muppets Take Manhattan breakout role. And he certainly was at least a background character on The Muppet Show earlier than that! I just recently found a Wonder Woman website (http://www.wonderland-site.com/index2.htm) that had two video clips from Lynda Carter's appearance on The Muppet Show and one of them had Rizzo show up as a superhero in the "Flash, Bam, Alcazam" song.)

As far as I know, Rocky Mountain Holiday debuted in 1983 and the John Denver-Muppets Christmas special premiered in 1979. Hope this helps!!
