One of my favorite actors.
While Roy will probably be most remembered for
Jaws, he did excellent work in films such as
Klute, The French Connection, The Seven-Ups (a gritty police drama),
Marathon Man, All That Jazz (in which he played a Bob Fosse-like character),
2010: The Year We Make Contact, and
Naked Lunch, the interesting William Burroughs adaptation by David Cronenberg.
One of my favorite Scheider films is the underrated
Sorcerer (1977). It was directed by William Friedkin, who was just coming off the double success of
The French Connection and
The Exorcist. Friedkin decided his next film would be a remake of the stark French drama,
Le Salaire de la Peur (Wages of Fear). The end result was a critical and financial disaster, and quickly halted Friedkin's hot streak. But it's an interesting film, and Scheider gives an excellent performance.
It is rumored that Scheider (along with Steve McQueen) was up for the role of John Rambo in
First Blood, before it ultimately went to Sylvester Stallone.
