One of my favorite actors.

While Roy will probably be most remembered for Jaws, he did excellent work in films such as Klute, The French Connection, The Seven-Ups (a gritty police drama), Marathon Man, All That Jazz (in which he played a Bob Fosse-like character), 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and Naked Lunch, the interesting William Burroughs adaptation by David Cronenberg.

One of my favorite Scheider films is the underrated Sorcerer (1977). It was directed by William Friedkin, who was just coming off the double success of The French Connection and The Exorcist. Friedkin decided his next film would be a remake of the stark French drama, Le Salaire de la Peur (Wages of Fear). The end result was a critical and financial disaster, and quickly halted Friedkin's hot streak. But it's an interesting film, and Scheider gives an excellent performance.

It is rumored that Scheider (along with Steve McQueen) was up for the role of John Rambo in First Blood, before it ultimately went to Sylvester Stallone.

Roy also appeared in an episode of Family Guy..."Bill and Peter's Bogus Journey." The Bill in the title is Clinton, whom Peter befriends.

Scheider plays himself as the host of a toilet-training video, that Stewie and Brian watch.

I always liked Roy Scheider a lot too. I thought he was a good actor and was somewhat underrated. His movies he was in were often very good themselves.

Jaws was fantastic for so many reasons (Spielberg's direction, riveting shark scenes, a riveting and catchy score by John Williams, great writing, good cinematography, excellent acting by Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw) but Scheider in the starring role as Chief Brody was also a huge contribution to Jaws being the masterpiece it is.

Roy Scheider was probably the only good thing about Jaws II. Aside from the classic tagline: "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water."
